  • Irrigation vs Lightning Protection

I wanted to poll the community to see how folks protect their irrigation system from Lightning.

One of the Major things NO ONE asks or talks about is Lightning Strikes...... IT WILL Happen to you. This is poorly communicated by the Sprinkler industry. They don't offer it unless you get into the more expensive commercial or Golf Course systems, these are two wire style with dedicated decoders. No Consumer grade sprinklers offer protection including Hunter, Rainbird etc offer anything. They simply sell you another system. Googling yields limited information... So if your about to plan a system you might want to give this some serious consideration.

What hardware or protection measure do you take?

Do you have surge suppressors on the wires to the valves?

Do you have any special protection on the sprinkler panel?

Do you have any protection in your breaker panel?

Do you have any additional grounding system to the house panels i.e. multiple ground rods to dissipate the energy?

What would you recommend if you had to start over if your system was struck by Lightning and burned up?

.... How long have you had these in service? The boards are pretty inexpensive to replace if the MOV is blow out during a surge.

It was WGL that recommended this at the time. I previously had an indirect strike near my neighborhood and it took out the rain8net and the zones were ok. So after repair of the rain8net and installing this I've had no problems.

Please note you need to use the TPT-24LIT model for 1-5 amp on each channel the "TPT-24SLP models are less than 400 mA.
