Radio Shack (I get erpy just typing their name) sells an enclosed 4 AAA battery holder with a tiny switch on it. 270-411
With just a touch of interior trimming it will fit in the standard Cheaper box.
And, optionally you could put a hole in the Cheaper box that lines up with the power switch on that little box so you can turn the whole unit on and off.
You might be able to fore go the trimming if you take the one case half off of the battery box.
Local cost was $1.69, I don't remember if they had a 2 AAA enclosed box for the 8m units.
