Mobile Backup

I had an interesting issue over the weekend. My physical line went down and I was unable to send txt messages. (zText modem)

Now there seemed to be no error's being displayed.

So my question is:

1) Can there be some sort of error handling for the zTXT modem so I can catch this in future

2) Can I pair up a phone to act as a backup along side the zTXT modem?
