    Troubleshooting help

    I'm hoping there is a simple fix for this issue that I am overlooking. I have installed the TWA-Onkyo / Integra Plug-in with Homeseer Pro via a dual head USB serial adapter. I have confirmed that the serial port is active by shutting down HSPro and opening two serial terminals to their respecitve ports (same speed, parity, stop, and flow control). When I type text in one terminal I see it in the other and visa versa. I have also verified the pins of the serial cable are connected correctly.

    The best I can tell, the plug-in is unable to communcate with my Onkyo TX-SR806 (Firmware version 1.06/08Z06B) via serial communication. I setup the plugin for Com 11 and turned on debug then clicked on discover. Currently my HSPro box is pegged at 100% utilization and has been slowly failing on each command. This has been going on for the past few hours. Another interesting obersvation is that I can not communcate or see any replies when I connect using Hyperterminal (9600, N, 8,1,No Flow). I have included sections of the log below in hopes that someone can give me an idea on how to make it work.

    I really dont think there is a problem with the plugin. I think it may be a hardware problem. Are you using a null or straight through serial cable? First i noticed you are using 1.0.1.0 version of the plugin. That plugin is very old. Try updating to 1.1.4 first not 1.1.5. You can update to 1.1.5 after the devices are created. Thanks

      Thanks Tom,

      I have upgraded to version 1.1.5

      I am sure my cable is correct

      Onkyo side (9 pin male) HomeSeer side (9 pin female)
      Pin 2 (Tx) -----> Pin 3 (Rd)
      Pin 3 (Rd) -----> Pin 2 (Tx)
      Pin 5 (Gnd) -----> Pin 5 (Gnd)

      I am concerned that the firmware may be too old. The spreadsheet that I have from Onkyo (Onkyo_RS-232_RCVR_083109.xls) says that support for my TX-SR806 was not added until firmware rev. 1.09. I have firmware version 1.06.

      Also can anyone provide a sample of what they see when connected via a serail terminal program. I figure if I can communicate via a simple terminal then the plugin will definitely work.

        More Research

        I called Onkyo support and was referred to a very knowledgable tech named Brian. Here is what he told me:

        - As long as the receiver has a physical serial port, the receiver will work with all the commands laid out in the spreadsheet. Firmware version does not matter for serial communication.

        - All 3 pins need to be straight through on both ends. 2 to 2, 3 to 3, and 5 to 5. He suggested that I use a multimeter to tone it out.

        - You should be able to open a terminal program with the proper setting, and send a command such as !1PWR01<CR>+<LF> and the receiver will turn on. Note: must use all CAPs in the command.

        With all of the above info and following it to the letter, I am still unable to communicate with my TX-SR806. I am close to moving back to IR and leaving RS232 for a future project.

        Any and all suggestions appreciated.

          Problem Solved

          The problem was with my 9 pin M-F cable. since the USB to serial adapter has a 9 pin male connector on it, I tried to directly connect it to my receiver. Bypassing my defective cable allowed me to communicate with the TX-SR806 without error.

          For anyone that is interested, I tested with HyperTerminal (9600, N, 8, 1, No flow). You will see nothing while typing the commands. When you press enter, you will see the command that you sent echoed back. Examples below:

          !1PWR01!1PWR00

          !1PWR01 means power on. I received !1PWR01 in my terminal window after I typed in the command and pressed return. !1PWR00 means power off. Again I received it after I enterd the command and pressed return.

          I hope this info can help someone else in the future.
