w800 serial unit died?? could it be?

Ok so i have used my w800 for along time and it has worked great.. so great that i had a spare and got rid of it... DOH!!!!!

so i have had issues lately... no my issues personally are different...

ok so i had my garage 100% a while ago... open door.. concord 4 would trip motion and turn light on... when no motion.. then light off... if you walked through a garage door.. motion would catch ya and turn the light on...

but one day it stopped working correctly.. the off part.. i noticed this in the laundry room, master closet and garage....

now i remember a thread where people said how hey are addressing the missing off's...

well see if you can follow this...

    tonight...
    1. i put new batteries in my ms13a
    2. set it for G16
    3. pushed the off button on the motion and my light went off... light is G10 so an event did that...
    4. pushed the on button and HS received the G16 on but didnt state the event for lights on... that got me confused...

even weirder is HS status page said it was on....
i was using a palm pad 100% on and off's.... did like 50 each... in different orders....

so i was thinking back of what has changed since i was solid.. and i remember getting usb to serial units ... a 2 port and 4 port edgeport...

installed my dual serial card and pci-e 1x serial card
so i put my ti103 on com 1 on mobo
w800 and ztroller on pci dual serial card
brultech and concord 4 on pci-3 1x card

got all serial ports setup and running but for w800...
acrf2 plugin cannot locate my adapter...

    i changed the serial cable
plugged it into mobo and changed acrf2 plugin to com 1 (disabling ti103 plugin)
tried both ports on dual serial

    nothing would work....

followed post by BobT on another thread

so im in a stump.. did my w800 bite the bullet? dont know how to test it... im going to see if i have hyperterminal but not sure what to do...
just try and connect to com10 @ 4800????

any help greatly appreciated... and if you have a spare w800 laying around let me know... or i should pony up and get a rfxcom 310 slave unit....

Use an X10 remote FOB or palm pad to test it.

I ended up purchasing another one when mine went out. I sent it in to WGL and I was told it was fine; and it wasn't.

Instead of using HT to type to the w800, set off an rfdevice to see of characters come across. You should get a stream of 6 -8 charcters. They should be the same each time. do it from the same room so there is no doubt about signal. Try several devices to eliminate them.

Contract WGL about it if its dead. I dont know if he can do a cheap swap or refresh of it.

To do it over again I would look at the rfxcom.. it has some additional capabilities that I sometimes wish I had.

Before you spend $ on the RFXCom slave card, you should remember that it has a notch filter on the RF input. Most X10 RF stuff (if not all) in North America isn't all that well tuned and thus, generally a bit off frequency to one side or the other. This makes for quite a bit of unreliability. The W800 isn't quite so particular making it appear to be more reliable.
Could your antenna or cable to it have a loose connection?

They can be two band and there are other devices like weather stations that can communicate wirelessly. And I while I like WGL products, I think the RFXComm is a little more industrial strength. That's my opinion observing posts over the last few years.

It seems like between the wgl800s and x10 sprinkler controllers, they seem to go out (like now) and the response i see is to keep spares. So get two w800s for when this happens to you again, or 1 RFXcom?

                Paul

EDIT: Wasn't aware of wades comment but good point.

does it need the antennea even attached for homeseer to see it using a comm port?

Probably not if you are next to it; but I never tried. Put a small piece of wire in the center terminal; should work well enough for a test.

Try checking the power supply or swapping it with another power supply. That was the first sign of mine acting up. I would just unplug the PS and plug it back in. It would come back to life for a little bit.

BTW; if you go to Homeseer; diable the plugin and re-enable the plugin; you can see it communicating. It will error out if its not talking to Homeseer. Then if it is; turn up the debug; and try your wireless again. You will see all kinds of traffic if its working.

Just call me R__p. It was quite late.
I'll stand by the other bit though. I've tried an RFX for motion/palmpads/DS10s. Some devices worked; most didn't. There was talk of removing the notch filter on the receiver at one time. If that's been done, then by all means - RFX is the way to go.

well if all goes through.. ill be getting a w800 for $35 plus shipping..
                          so will let you know..

if not.. still on the fence.. depends on the total price of the rfx and how long to get it...

this is my hobby where frankly the motion hasnt really been working so wife dont really care about it.. and my play account is depleted...

however the oddest thing about all this is before i chose to go back to card based serial... my palm pad was working just fine with turning the lights on and off.. making me think my w800 was fine.. but oh well.. my luck it most likely finally died...

                            here is an odd question...

i know i bought one of those power strips with the dc lines on it... and the w800 was plugged into that... could the dc volts be up to high and just over time fried it? or would just too much power fry it off the bat and go from there?

when i get a replacement i will move away from the dc power strip for that unit...
