    Hej, Tony,

It's very challenging doing serial control of these devices. I wrote the VB setup program and plug-in for the AB8SS, and will eventually do the same for the AVS8X8. If you want to tackle it yourself, you might find some hints on the AB8SS page: http://www.hacs.com/AB8ssSIO.html which explains how communication takes place. It's my understanding that the AVS8X8 works in the same manner.

If you want to wait a (long) while, I will write a plug-in for teh AVS8X8 so that HS can control it serially, but you could use either X10 or IR to control it in the meantime.

    Best wishes for your success!

    Hej da,

I have tried to build a simple script to communicate with avs-8x8 but I am not shure that I am on the right way.
Do anyone have any codesnip that runs from homeseer to the speaker switch AB8SS. Maybe I could learn some from there.
Here is the log from homeseer with the attach script.

        Hej, Tony.

I don't think it's possible to communicate well with the AVS8X8 with a script. The timing is an issue, so the best thing to do would be to tackle it in a plug-in. Remember that you have to send a character to the device to get it's attention, then send one character at a time (waiting for an echoed response) before sending the next. The AB8SS (and I'd assume the AVS8X8) do not have buffers, so that's why you have to send a character at a time.

It was a real pain to get it to work on the AB8SS, so hang in there!

I would like to buy one of these to play with. Unfortunately, I can't justify it - I just don't have enough use for one.

If I did get one, I'd probably end up building a hardware interface (microcontroller-based) to sit between this box and the PC. This interface would take nice, simple commands from the PC and handle the communications with the switch. It seems to me that this would fill a gap that exists in the current hardware.

A script in HS could send simple commands like "S14" to connect output 1 to input 4. All of the handshaking would be handled by the hardware interface.
