Plug-in keeps loading music over and over

I loaded up the, new to me, Media Player Plug-in last night, ver 2.4.0.19 I think. I didn't have time to play so all I did was load it and make sure HS re-started without errors.

I got a call from my wife a while ago to tell me the HA computer is making a lot more noise than is normal and has been all day. It seems that the media player is loading tracks, play-lists and VR stuff over and over. Looking at the log it's been doing it all day. No wonder the system is a little noisy, it's working it's poor little heart out loading all that over and over and over.

It looks like it started when my wife was ripping this weeks CD's into our collection. The media player detected a change and reloaded. That part would be fine, except it never stopped and she did this at 8am this morning.

As soon as I'm done writing this I'll have to log in, if it has time, and see if I can shut down and restart it. Hopefully this will stop it.

But, for next time, is this a bug? will this happen every time I add a CD to the collection?

Or is this a feature. kidding here, but seriously, is this a trouble ticket item?

Here is just one cycle of what it's doing, except it's done it hundreds of times this morning.

I saw this early on with our library as well. The good news: it did finally settle down a day or two after I finished copying my music over from my old drive to my current system.

The bad news: I did quite a bit of playlist editing tonight and happened to take a look at the log and that cycle is baaaack. I don't know if it's trying to go thru each song and add voice commands or what is going on, but like you, I am also seeing a few errors about not being able to add voice commands, and it continually cycles.

I definitely see a hit on the response time in my events during this time.

I'm curious - did you (or your wife) add any of those newly ripped songs to any playlists?

Also, how is your shuffle working?? Mine will NOT shuffle songs, no matter how many times I toggle shuffle. I do have a ticket in on this, but I was curious if you were suffering with anti-shuffle too.

One thing is for sure: I miss the previous version of the plugin. I've started from scratch after my previous system crashing and moving into a new home, so I installed the latest (and greatest(?)) plugin and it's been quite a learning curve.

We don't use playlists at all, I haven't really played with media player much yet so I haven't had to get down to editing playlists a lot. This is the first version I've had that didn't just choke and freeze on the library size. I find playlists to be most cumbersome to use and always needing to be edited. We on average add a 3 to 4 new CD's a week to the collection and I still have about 5000 albums that need to be ripped.

The one playlist i did set up to test with did not shuffle.

I really hate to say this after only an hour or two looking at it but I'm finding it to be an extremely clunky application. Not something I'll be showing off at the next social gathering to be sure.

Guests are used to going to the screen and picking a song or two to add to the queue. I sure can't allow guests to play with this thing. I have no desire to teach them how to setup a playlist, nor a desire to spend my after party time deleting all the playlists that get created.

Is this queue method a homegrown tool, or...?

How do you go about getting a mix of music when guests aren't there? You know - when you need some background music for yourself.

I think it's library size dependent. I use the latest beta with about 1000 songs and have no problems what so ever. The interfaces that Windows Media Player offers simply do not work well with mega libraries. I moved my favorite songs into one directory and point WMP to this folder and it works well. I figure it will be a few years before I get through the thousand I've got now

My main music player is an application that plays random music anytime it's active. If you haven't picked something to play specifically, it does. For me I mostly pick a genre or several genre's i feel like at that time and let it go on it's own.

I think you're right. My wife and I are both very big into music and right now I only have it pointed at half our online collection. When I give it the whole thing it chokes. I am hoping at some point when HST gets time they will get serious about a quality music player.

I'm going to put in a help desk ticket anyway. Even though the app is not what I think it should be, it still shouldn't keep cycling over and over everytime I add a new CD.

I can tell you that iTunes is a quality music player and it does the same thing on really large music libraries. Try disabling the VR events associated with WMP if you do not use them and see if you see a difference.

The problem I had with Itunes was it's DRM policies. I lost a couple hundred bucks worth of downloaded music because I moved it to a different Hard Drive too many times and the app thought i was giving it away or something. After hours on the phone with Apple tech support and getting nowhere I gave up on it. I ripped out Itunes after that and have never gone back. Granted that was a couple of years ago and they may have changed but since then I don't use anything with an I in front of it, Itunes, Ipod, Iphone, etc.

Oh, I'd love to disable VR on the music player since I don't use it. Is that a setting in the player or HS or you just mean disable the events that get created in HS after startup?

Realize this thread is a little old, but where do you go to "just disable the VR events for the plugin"?

Only place I can seem to find is in the "Events" tab and disabling "Media Player Album VR (B)", "Media Player Artist VR (B)", etc. I can't find any other place to disable VR for the Media plug in.

And yes I'm getting the perpetual loaded xxxx tracks...problem.

All you need to do is disable those events. If you see the same tracks loading then your library may have some duplicates or bad records. Are you running the latest MP plugin from the updater?

the only way i found to stop the rescanning of the music library was to shut down HomeSeer, let wmp rescan the library and then restart HomeSeer. if you add to the library when HomeSeer is running it will start all over again most of the time. I've taken to only adding to the library when HomeSeer is shut down.

as for the vr stuff, i have them all disabled but it still scans them at startup. I'm meticulous with labeling the library and the id3 tags but HomeSeer gives me pages of errors at startup. For example, i have probably a hundred albums and probably many more than that, named "greatest hits" all by different artists but they all come up as errors anyway.

Nightwalker, you are right on the money. Any music library updates should be when homeseer is shut down, or I've learned to just let HS do its repeative reloading while I update the music library (so all of the other HS controls still happen...albeit with some latency) then when I'm done updating I "reboot" HS. It does one reload and all is back to normall.

Thanks for reply Rupp and Nightwalker.
