Connection Problems with HS Touch Server

I hope someone can assist with my connection problem: Basically, I just installed the HSTouch plug-in in HomeSeer 2.4.0.2 This seems to have worked OK as on the Interfaces Tab, both HSTouch Server and HSTouch iPhone are shown as 'Enabled' and status is Interface OK. After installation I have obviously re-started HomeSeer.

I have then installed the client and designer on my laptop (not same as the server running HomeSeer). I noticed that the default connection port to HSTouch Server is 10200, in my installation I have HomeSeer running on port 81. I have therefore added the line PortNumber=81 to the hspi_HSTouch.ini file under the Settings line. Then restarted HomeSeer again.

When I try to run the designer from my laptop I cannot seem to connect. I am using the correct internal IP address 192.168.1.99 and port 81 with the username and password. I also have Vista Gadgets running on the same laptop and it is connecting fine with the same details (IP and PORT number etc.) therefore it looks like the actual connection is possible, but HSTouch Designer cannot seem to open it. I have added the start up log from HomeSeer below, as it seems to report an HSTouch Server Error. I hope someone can assist to get this up and running:

Did you allow the port that the designed connects through in your fire wall?

In my Windows Firewall 'Exceptions' tab, I have the HomeSeer HS2 listed. I have also tried to turn the windows Firewall Off, but this makes no difference. From my laptop, I can easily access the Homeseer webserver (http://192.168.1.99:81) and have full control over all devices, events etc. so I really think that there is a working connection. Why would HS Touch have an issue that both HomeSeer and the Vista Gadget plug-in don't seem to have. Does anyone have any other ideas ??

Doing some research on the reported error in the log, I found one explanation below, however this is not related to HomeSeer. I have closed any connection to the HomeSeer webserver (i.e. removed the VistaGadget and shut down the browser, but the HSTouch software still claims it cannot connect.
HSTouch Server Error Exception in client listener: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted

re: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port)is normally permitted

This normally happens when a client tries to connect on a socket on which
another connection has already been accepted...

You stated you installed the designed on a seperate computer. If you do not forward the designers port via your router you may not be able to reach your HS server. I'm also a bit confused as to why your edited an ini file and not use the supplied connection form.

I think your porblem may be the port #. Homeseer and HSTouch use different ports. Try and go back to the default Touch port #

OK, small improvement here, I did not realise that HSTouch and HomeSeer use different ports. Anyway, I have now removed the added PortNumber line from the ini file (this was specified in the HSTouch help system by the way). Stopped homeseer and re-started. I now don't have the previously reported error in the log and the log confirms that HSTouch Server has started on port 10200. So far so good. When I now use the laptop to conned the Designer programm with the port 10200 setting, it still comes up that it cannot connect. I have tried to disable the Windows Firewall and have also added port 10200 as an exception, but neither will result in a working connection. I think the problem is getting better i.e. no error in the log and back to the default port, but the connection is not yet there.

              Thanks for your ongoing support.

What user are you using for your connection?

I am using a user which I created a long time ago (vossenh) with accompanying password. These log-in details have Admin rights (and Local) and I can use this to remotely log in to HomeSeer from an external internet connection e.g. office so I know these work.

What I have found now though, is that if I start the designer, it first comes up with the message box stating: "Unable to connect to the HomeSeer Server. Check your connection defaults from the Tools Menu....." If I click OK, it will then come up with the small Connection dialog box, which holds the correct default values. I cancel this to start the designer anyway, and then after say 30 seconds, the connection is established (red dot turns green and homeseer connection is made). I have read this behaviour in your forum elsewhere from another user, not sure if there is a way around this as the connection is obviously working, but not immediately. I am running this from a laptop with wireless connection, but that seems to give no other connectivity issues with anything else, including HomeSeer webaccess.

                  Thanks,

                  Harry

At this point I would recommend shutting down HS then uninstalling the HSTouch plugin and designer/client. Then reinstall the plugin, and designer/client from here: http://www.homeseer.com/downloads Then try to see if it connects faster. This may also reset your registry entries that should fix this.

You mentioned that you reset to the default port and now don't get the initialization error.

To check if the listener is working correctly on the network do this -

From your Homeseer server, open a command prompt.

                      enter the following:

                      telnet server_ip_address 10200<enter>

substitute the homeseer server ip for the second parameter above. If the dos screen goes blank, you established a connection, move on. If you get an error message either the server isn't running or you have a windows firewall issue. Disable windows firewall and try again.

If it worked, move on to the client machine. Run the same command from a command prompt. Again, if the screen goes blank you have a good network connection, if you get an error disable windows firewall on both machines and try again.

                      Good luck.
