"Hub stopped responding" after some inactive time it seems

    Hi Mark,

I haven't been active on the forum for a while, but I keep reading new posts and I still see you actively supporting your plugin. Thank you for that. If it wasn't for you, I would have considered jumping ship from Insteon.

    New house, new problems.

Problem - After Insteon has idled some amount of time ( no cmds sent), the Hub stops responding when the plugin finally sends it a command (2 actually to get to the 10 transmit fails). Once the plugin resets the hub, all is fine in that I can send any number of commands successfully.

    Notes:
    • I have factory reset the Hub, same issue
    • Currently, I only have a few LampLinc's installed
    • This is probably a coincidence, but I started getting this issue when I went from 3.0.7.12 to 3.0.7.36; still running HS3
    • I'm unabled so far to determine the idle time before lock up, but I've seen the Hub be responsive even after up to 5-7 hours of inactivity
    • Attached is the Insteon Error Report, which I'm not sure will be that useful, and Insteon parameters
Along with a boatload of new Insteon devices, I purchased an extra Hub. Before replacing the Hub, I would like to rule out anything but a slowly dying Hub.

Do you have any thoughts as to how to debug this one?

[Update-1] I tried to activate the "LED flash on TX" setting on one of the LampLinc's to see if I could see signs of a storm, but no flashing. Is this parameter still supported?

[Update-2] Not getting any better ... Attempting to retrieve links and parameters from a LampLinc a few times unsuccessfully, the plugin asked to be restarted. When I did so and asked to retrieve the same links and parameters, the plugin got an error - see attachment-2

your settings look fine. have you tried a factory reset and reprogram on the Hub? another good test between the plugin and the hub is to run the 'display interface links'.
looks like you are using an original V1 rectangular hub

the led flash on TX setting still works. i recently tested on a switchlinc

I remember seeing it work on a SwitchLinc, but never tried on a LampLinc. Couldn't find any reference to that function in the docs either.

        two things to look for.

        (1) there might be a problem device causing the issue. look at the following msg and see if any of the digits look like one of your device insteon ids

        027F0206027F0006027F0206027F0006027F0206027F0006027F0206027F 0006027F0206027F0006027F0206027F0006027F0206027F0006027F0206 027F0006027F0206027F0006027F0206027F0006027F0206027F0006

        2. the content of the insteon.ini that was posted in the previous report-2.txt file doesn't look correct.

I too noticed strange devices: any device number above 3 is a carry over from my previous house; I reused the insteon.ini from my previous house. Strangely some old devices got purged from the insteon.ini, some others not.

            Hi Mark,

            Couple of questions
            1) IS there and HS4 version of Insteon.in the future?
            2) Do you have an idea of when it might be released?

I have purchased > 30 plug ins from you because of Insteons robustness and versatility with a myriad of devices. Do I need to be thinking of Z-Wave, UPB or ZigBee?

            Please Advice

I'm slowing working on my hs4 insteon plugin. however, the problems you are experiencing aren't related to the hs3 plugin. ie, an hs4 plugin wouldn't help.

Since you are restarting in a new home, it might worth resetting the hub, and the insteon devices, and starting with a clean insteon setup in HS. Delete all insteon devices from HS, and restart with a blank insteon.ini file

                Mark,

I believe you thought you were responding to me (I'm in a new home), but the poster (paweng) just piggybacked on my post with a totally different issue.

I am still seeing that strange buffer. My active devices are:
                  45:48:E2 (Hub)
                  21:88:E9 (LamLinc)

                  3E:66:58 (LamLinc)
                  3E:4D:CB (LamLinc)

I have attached the detailed log hoping you will find some hint; look at 2020-12-30 4:21 PM. Again, once the Hub is restarted, I can interface it without problem for quite some time. The issue seems to come up after some idling of the Hub.

I thought about noise, but I'm puzzled by the fact that once the Hub is restarted, all commands get processed correctly for quite some time. So, if noise could be the issue, why would it throw off the Hub but not be an issue once the Hub is restarted?

in the meantime, have you tried a factory reset on each device and then reprogram the device for homeseer

I have done the factory reset on the Hub several times. Will do the reset on the few LampLincs in the network next.

                        Hi Mark,

So I reset the 4 LamLinc's and, as I was doing so, I was getting several errors reprogramming them. I then swapped the Hub with a newly purchased one. I succeeded in doing the 'swap/replace' and everything seemed to go OK for a while. Then things got not OK:
                        • 2021-01-03 8:33:05 PM - Hub.GetXMLBuffer still busy /// But things appear to recover by themselves
                        • 2021-01-03 11:12:57 PM - Interface successfully restarted. /// After 10 failed transmits (2 cmds)

I need to resolve this issue before I start installing 3k$ of Insteon throughout the new house. And I have no clue what the problem is.

Any thoughts as to my next step?

                          claude,

here are a few things to check/think about:

have you tried correlating when the system fails and other electrical activity in the house?

do you have noise filters on electronics?

have you tried cutting breakers to isolate the noise?

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I've always been puzzled as to why dual-band doesn't overcome powerline noise issues when you have plenty of dual-band devices near each other. If anyone knows of a thread or post on that particular topic I would love to read it.

Remember when I mentioned that the issue started coincidentally when I upgraded to 3.0.7.36 ?

Well, maybe coincidence again, but I reverted back to 3.0.7.1 and have been running for 3 days without the issue.
