Recommendations for Getting Started with Insteon and Homeseer

You need the following:
- an Insteon controller such as the PLM 2413U (usb), 2413S (serial), or the newer Insteon Hub. I recommend the 2413S as it is more reliable. The USB dongle (2448A7-no longer available) was a good choice if your HS server is centrally located in your house and you don't need X10 capabilities.
- the new insteon hub (which is a network device) is a supported controller in v1.8 or later
- either a Singalinc (2406H) or a pair of dual-band devices (one installed on each leg/phase) of your electrical system. a pair of Access Points (2443) work as well.
- the Insteon PLM plugin


Prerequisites for the Insteon Hub:
you must to get the hub online and accessible locally via a browser; for example http://192.168.1.80:25105/network.htm. i would suggest a static ip address for the hub.

i believe the latest hubs come with an admin pswd that is printed on the bottom, so you may need to login with these creds. If all this works then you can proceed


This procedure is for HS2/HS3:

Here are the basics for getting started using a Smarthome PLM based interface and Homeseer:

1. Go to the HS Updater and install the following plugin: Insteon PLM Plug-In By Mark Sandler

Note: if you downloaded the plugin from the forum, shutdown HS, copy the hspi_insteon.dll (and other dlls) to your homeseer. For HS2 copy the insteon.lf file to the config folder and continue with step 3 below. The HS3 plugin should be installed from the Updater.

3. For Windows, If you have a 2412u, 2413u or 2448A7T, then download and install the latest ftdi chipset drivers. this driver will provide the virtual com port that the plugin needs. This is probably not necessary for Homeseer appliances, or other Linux installations.

Drivers are not required for the 2412s or 2413s or the Insteon Hub.

4. HS2: Restart HS and goto the HS setup/interface page, and Enable the IO Interface. If you use X10, enable that interface as well.
    HS3: Restart HS, go to the Manage/Plugin page and enable the plugin. Enable X10 on the plugin config page if necessary.

5. Goto the plugin config page (use the Insteon link on the previous page) and set the port: COM1, COM2, etc, or for the Hub enter the local IP address:Port# (eg 192.168.1.80:25105). You will also need to enter a username & password when using the hub. This is not the Smarthome Connect username & password

Note: for Linux (or Linux based devices like the HomeTroller Zee series) and OSX installations use something like the following for the Port name:

/dev/ttyS0 is COM1
/dev/ttyS1 is COM2
/dev/ttyUSB0 is USB (start here for OSX)

6. Restart the plugin again and watch for a successful connection from the plugin to the Interface.

7. Use the plugin Manage Devices page to start adding devices, etc.; Use the Add a New Insteon Device button. Enter the Insteon ID and location and name to register a device.
