Ring Doorbell Event Notification using ioBroker and mcsMQTT

    Ring Doorbell Event Notification using ioBroker and mcsMQTT

    I recently installed a Ring Video Doorbell Pro to replace my aging analog doorbell and have been very pleased with the functionality and performance of the device.



    The Ring app is functional and is a good one-stop location for viewing stored video of motion and ring events. After a 30 day free trial, this cloud service costs $30/year. I will most likely go with this service because of the convenience but I have also been looking for a way of getting notifications of doorbell events into HomeSeer to trigger other events. The implementations I have looked at - Node-Red and the BLRing HS3 plugin are unreliable mainly because there is no official public Ring API and the reverse engineering efforts have to keep up with the constantly changing parameters.
    I have found one implementaton that, so far, has been very reliable and responsive. It is the Ring Adapter for the open source HA platform ioBroker. Using this adapter and the MQTT adapter for the same platform, I am able to get topics published for a Motion or a Ring event when it happens from which devices and events can be created using mcsMQTT. Here's a summary of the process:

    1. Install ioBroker on a Linux/Windows VM or PC. Use this link for the installation process:

    2. Check the active ioBroker repo with the console comand:

    iobroker repo


    3. Set the iobroker repo to 'latest':

    iobroker repo set latest


    4. Upgrade the ioBroker js-controller:

    iobroker upgrade self


    5. Upgrade all the adapters:

    iobroker upgrade


    6. Open the ioBroker web page at http://ipaddress:8081 and install the MQTT Client Adapter and the Ring Adapter. Make sure the Ring Adapter version is 1.0.4:




    7. Configure the Ring Adapter with your email and password and select one of the API options. The Doorbot API works well for me. You may have better luck with the Ring API.






    8. Configure the MQTT Client Adapter






    9. Configure the Ring Doorbell event to publish the MQTT topic you want. In this example the topic is ringdoorbell/event and the payload can be either "motion", "ding" or "null".






    10. Create HS3 device and events as described in the mcsMQTT manual http://mcssprinklers.com/mcsMQTT.pdf
    Here are my HS3 device and events:




    Event to open front door IP camera stream when doorbell is rung. The IP camera is an existing Hikvision cam. This event uses mcsMQTT, UltraMon, Jon00 Activity Monitor and the Eventghost plugins:




    Event to open front door IP camera stream on TV when doorbell rings. Uses mcsMQTT and the Kodi plugins:




    Event to play Doorbell Chime sound on all Sonos speakers when the doorbell rings. Uses mcsMQTT and Sonos plugins:

      Can ioBroker be installed on the machine as MQTT?
