    Batteries Don't Update

For some reason, the battery values on all my Z-wave devices stopped updating sometime around September 6. I have a report listing all my battery levels emailed to me twice a month, and last night's report (below) shows a last update in the range of 9/4 - 9/6. The exceptions are the two locks that updated yesterday, and a Dome Mousetrap that updated on 9/20. I haven't made any changes to any of the devices (i.e. changed polling time), nor have I recall making any other changes to the network. I did bring up a second Z-net in that timeframe, but I think it's a coincidence as it's a completely different Z-wave network, and that Z-net is 460 ft away from the main house.

I changed the polling on the Great Room Multi-sensor to 5 minutes, but no change in the battery levels. It has new batteries, so it should be 100%.

    Ideas on what's going on?

I am seeing similar issues with battery devices. Installed a new set of batteries in one of our smoke and CO detectors and the battery stayed at 0% for over a week.
I am also seeing new Failed sending Z-Wave command to device error messages showing up in my log these past few weeks as well.

This is just my experience with Z-Wave and batteries:
      • Some devices report every 12h and/or every 24h.
      • Some devices only report when the value changes.
      • Some devices only report when polled.
      • Some devices never report at all.
      • HS has a setting to only allow the last updated time changed if the value changed.

So, it's hit or miss when it comes to battery reports. I notice you have a Dome mouse trap. I have a Dome water sensor that reports battery at 100%, then completely dies without reporting anything else.

Yeah, my IRIS water sensor has reported only once since I picked it up for $5 when Lowes killed IRIS. Everything else was accurate up until September, i.e. they would drop a percentage every month until I replaced the battery, then would show up at 100% for a while. Below is the August mid-month report. The Great Room Multi-sensor was at 30% here, and then dropped to 20% for the first September report (it's one of the Monoprice units and only reports to the nearest 10%). That's what clued me in that I had an issue, as I remembered changing the battery on it and it was still showing 20%. Then I noticed the dates on everything else.

Just to add to this, it's also largely dependent on the battery formulation. The Lithium batteries are notorious for reporting 100% continuously, they do not slowly discharge like alkalines. Their discharge is like a cliff, they severely drop off one day.

Just as an FYI, I'm running HS4 and a variety of both Z-wave and Zigbee battery sensors and devices, I have units reporting battery levels today and within the last week.

In the case of Z-wave devices, one has to wake the device in order to program the battery reporting interval, but by default most are 12 or 24 hours. Setting the polling interval on HS typically makes no difference since the device has to be awake in order to report, this only works for devices that are always awake.

For Zigbee battery devices, most are optimized to report battery only when there is a percentage change by a certain amount. I have devices that reported once when they were included and have not reported again in the last month and a half.
