Google discontinuing Hangouts and moving to Chat. How to setup this plugin for Chat?

I've been using this plugin to get messages from HS via Google Hangouts for a long time.
Now Google is discontinuing Hangouts and telling everyone to use Chat instead.

I've read conflicting reports regarding if Chat will continue to work via XMPP.

Does anyone know the proper configuration for using Chat with this plugin? (the manual only shows examples for Hangouts)

If Google removes XMPP support form Chat, will this plugin still work? will it get an update? is there another plugin that may offer longer term support?

    Thanks

Google chat does not use XMPP so it will not work with this plugin. Google has been talking about disabling XMPP for years. I have not seen an exact date when they will disable XMPP.

      Thanks.
I guess I'll keep using it with Hangouts until google decides to kick me out. Hopefully an alternative pops up by then.

I switched to the pushover plugin for now. Maybe when I get some free time I will look into creating a google chat plugin.

Not too familiar with Pushover. What I like about Hangouts/chat is that msgs are automatically received on any device that's logged in to the right google account (including desktop of any os flavour), and it's automatically stored into the account history. Does pushover work like that? Or is it more like point-to-point?
