    a few questions,
    1. I see on the Decreased Polling device that 5 min control use is set to "off" and 6 min is set to "on" whilst the remaining lines have "Not Specified"
    2. Why on the Decreased Polling device for 4 Hours there is a value in the Row and Column fields "1,3"?
    3. On the Decreased Polling device should there be a status graphic (like Increased Polling device) that should be defined with a range from 5-1440?

      1. I don't bother with the "Control Use" values for devices that are not voice controlled. If voice command was enabled I would change those. I probably started with a basic On Off virtual device and modified the values. The Control Use are just the defaults.
      2. The row and column settings determine how the buttons are placed on the Device Manager or the Pop-up dialog. Read Post #5 in the Virtual Device creation thread where I explain what those settings are for. With so many individual values on the decreased virtual device, they no longer matter.
      3. That is also covered in the virtual device thread. You assign a graphic to a value or range of values. If you want the same graphic assigned to all values from 5-1440, you would set a RANGE.
Here is one where the buttons are all on row 1 each in their own column.

On the one where there a lot of buttons, the placement is no longer needing to be controlled.

Randy, many thanxs for taking the time.. I did not realize that the Increase/Decrease virtual devices values were manually selected where my confusion was that somehow the virtual device would increment values via the EasyTrigger command but instead it updates the iCloud Polling value to reflect the Manually selected value virtual device. I have to say I like the ability to have a single place to change the value, but I fear that like you once it set there's no reason to come to change it. Well I learnt more re virtual device setup and usage(s). Mike

The way I approach my system is (to the greatest extent possible) allow tailoring settings without editing Events. That is why the Virtual Devices are in a subfunction of controls. I have Location Controls, Power Controls, Thermostat Controls, etc.

              Look at your Event:

In my Event I use Exactly as a trigger so it will only trigger once. Also I use a condition checking that the polling interval is less than the virtual device. The condition would stop yours from triggering more than once, or changing the trigger to Exactly will allow it to trigger once.

I didn't post every Event or fence I use, I like the speed of GeoFency as opposed to iCloud updates. I use iCloud fences for redundancy. The outer ring is also for redundancy in certain critical Events.

On the topic of iCloud, the SL distance to home is essentially the same as Location Enter and Location Exit in PHL Triggers or User at Location and User Not at Location Conditions. Using the PHL Triggers and Conditions are based upon the Known location radiuses (radii?) and are quite effective. You can certainly use the SL distance if you desire. I do look at SL distance over time as a predictor as to approaching or leaving home and Paul has added a new "Direction" child device to aid in prediction. It is up to you as to how you want your system to operate, and how much you want to count on guessing. According to a Danish proverb "It’s Difficult to Make Predictions, Especially About the Future".

Again thanxs Randy, I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I find your explanation very helpful in understanding PHL, GeoFency and Mapping and how to develop functional events. I hope that some of my questions are helpful for those out there trying to adopt the PI for their unique situations and uses through the examples provided. I like your proverb it suits the situation well, Mike

Randy question in regards to Maps.. now that PHL2 is placing the various Maps into the prescribed directories, how are you using them and more importantly are you using any scripts or apps to make them SHMBO proof? I've noticed that the HS3 beta app seemed to be quite of late (not sure why) so are you using Imperihome or something else? Mike

I provide maps to family on private websites. My family can access the private pages on my primary domain. I do not publish them on my website.

Randy, whilst learning the pro's/con's of each PHL2 device I'm coming to the realization that to get rapid position status that one has to be aware of which devices have time built within them such as PHL Direction (5 minutes) and that all one really needs is; Current Location (known locations), Lat/Log for Maps, Geo fences and iBeacons the rest of the devices are nice to have but aren't necessary unless you have a unique use for them whilst looking at your previous posted examples you use the KISS principle and seem to also use the above devices as your core with a few extras e.g. garage door states ect..

If you want to have the garage door open upon arrival, the iBeacon is necessary to detect that you are in/on a particular vehicle. If you don't want that feature, you don't need iBeacons.

The only use I have for direction of travel is for much longer time periods. For example, if we are both in a car (iBeacon) and 50 miles from home and the direction of travel is toward home for 20 miles, the house can anticipate we are heading home and put lighting and energy to normal, fire up heating, hot water, etc. Conversely if we are both leaving home with a distance greater than 50 miles, the system can anticipate that we are going to be away for a while and set the heating back, set lighting to occupancy simulation, reduce energy and stop the water heater. Even at that, the mileage is more important than direction of travel, but the direction of travel combined with mileage is a little more telling.

For almost everything else related to automation, we use fences, because they are fast.

We also create "where in the world are mom and dad" maps for our daughter extended family with PHL for fun and anyone in the family can email a request for location (using a special code in the subject) which will generate a response with an attached map.

In the future, when provided by the PI author, we’ll use Hide/Unhide so we can continue to record - it is a feature request being added.

This event changes our camera displays. We don’t want to look at ourselves when at home.

Michael, I've had a chance to start looking at other solutions and I was interested in your Blue Iris routine can you share a snapshot of what your "Cameras - BI - Work and Home" event entails to turn BI camera's On/Off? thanxs Mike
