I just managed to get this working and wanted to pass along my experience.
I wanted to be able to setup a blacklist/whitelist type of answering machine setup with homeseer phone. The problem was how to test this, with what I wanted to accomplish being fairly complex in terms of events firing, scripts running, interacting with the phone database, etc (never had much luck with the "simulator" feature of HSphone working correctly). So here is what I came up with:
Skutch AS-4A telephone line simulator: $80
This electrically simulates POTS (talk battery, ringing, etc) and has a line in for audio.
CIDMage caller id generator, windows based software to generate caller id FSK via your soundcard: $50
Plug in the soundcard into the audio input of the AS-4A. I press the "push to ring" button on the AS-4a and click "play" on CIDMage after having set it up to what number I want to simulate.
This works great!!
