If I read things correctly I can use a way2call with Homeseer Pro 2.X to monitor incoming Caller IDs and take action based on the Caller ID. I'm getting tired of these ???holes the keep calling and want to just block some area codes. (I'm getting these 866 and 877 areas code sales calls)
Can i do this with a Way2Call box and the proper setup in Homeseer? Any info (or short primer) would be appreciated.

Its worse these days than those numbers of 866 and 877.

It appears that telemarketers are now purchasing whole untraceable cell phone number exchanges. Due to misuse of "private" CID; I have also blocked these calls.

Yeah, that is easy to do if you dont have a POTS alarm panel or satellite receiver that requires dialup. There are some hardware that still requires dial tone.

Personally I think its a matter of time before the telemarketers get to the cell phones.

Here I autoforward cell phone to house phone and leave cell phone in the charging cradle.

The POTS line is related to a WAF thing and alarm thing; wife will not utilize VOIP line for whatever reason and she shuts off her cell phone unless she is calling someone.

Maybe not for long. I occasionally get marketing calls on my cell. There is really nothing to stop crooks from robo calling cell numbers. I think the main reason POTS is still the primary target is because that's where they are most likely to find a gullible mark.

GSM gateway

Hi Chaps,

I know this is a bit off the thread but you can get a GSM gateway that takes a cellphone sim and you can plug a POTS phone into it.
I'm in the UK and have one which my norstar is plugged into. As an ex BT employee I hate giving them more money than I have too.
Another plus is all the marketing texts to the gateway fall into a black hole!
Here unfortunately we have to have a hardwired phone line for our broadband to work, another money spinner at my expense.

Yup here the copper wire is laden with taxes; use taxes; etc which has made it a bit of an expense. That said now also same said taxes or use taxes are going to VOIP and Cellular phones.

Once though that the telephone line; whether cellular (GSM) or just VOIP is "registered"; databases are freely utilized in a "willy nilly" fashion with no compliance relating to telemarketer calls.

The "new" thing is that the telemarketers are still making monies and concurrently paying fines if any as that seems to be a new business model; rubber stamped whatever the means these days.

Its a shame though that you have to pay for some means of some companies misuse and advertising blasts; but really similiar to surfing the web these days and being bombarded by "in your face" popups and advertisements.

The latest scam I've heard of is calling cell phones and hanging up so you get a missed call message. When you call the number back, you're charged $19.99 or more as well as a per minute charge. They seem to be buying up local numbers as well so you can't make a decision based on the area code etc. Rumor has it this particular scam is extending to land line numbers as well.

I had a call the other day on my house phone. It was a local number but they hung up the second I picked up on the second ring. I didn't recognize the number. No way I was calling it back.

Yup; here never had to block an entire set of numbers from one telemarketer before with Homeseer. I've seen this happening now at least twice in the last 2-3 months. The area code was in the middle of nowhere (some rural part of some state with populations of 10).

Can you just use something like 555-*-* or does it have to be the "%"

I am just doing what I put in post #3 via Steve's CID plugin that utilizes HSPhone and the NetCID box or just HSPhone by itself.

Other folks are utilizing HSPhone to do this and or some means of scripting the functions using the basic HSPhone / W2C scripted command set.

Give it a try and see what works for you.
