    which thermstat ?

Im ready to take the plunge into hvac control but I need advice on which thermostats to purchase. I have to heat pumps, one upstairs and one downstairs. they have the normal switches on the builder grade thermostats, heat, cool, off, fan auto fan on, emergency heat. The units run like a heat pump until the outside temperature drops below a certain temperature at which time the switch over to propane heat. any recomendations for which thermostats I should purchase would be greatly apreciated. not having to fish more wires to them would be a plus but I'll do it if it meens better functionality.

    happnatious1,
One of the first question is how hard is it to run a cable from both of your current tstats to your controlling PC? If it's not hard then I would recommend a serial based tstat. If it would be difficult to run the cabling then there is the RCS TX16B 2 way X10 tstats.

Having installed 4, I can highly recommend the HAI thermostats. With the free HS plug-in these are excellent units. The plug-in really makes these units shine.

Do a search here as there is a ton of information on these, as well as others. I know this question was asked a couple of months back.

I'll go with what Scott said. HAI all the way.

...and it is not just the plug-in that makes it great, it's Scott's script used with the plug in!

I'm using the HAI RC-100 with the plugin for my heat pump. Works Great!

Another vote here for the HAI thermostats and the new HS plugin. I have two RC-80's daisy-chained together using Cat-3 cable. It's the new plugin that makes them stable; using the old HS scripts, alot of people including myself had problems with the serial comms.

...so I guess this would be another vote for the HAI!?

I just don't unerstand the allure to a more expensive and more troublesome thermostat...

for the price the HAI is hands down the best communicating thermostat out there. I got rid of my HAI ONLY because of the fact i wanted more "commerical" type features having come from a commercial HVAC controller background, the idea of economizers very flexible staging / hysteresis controls, etc sent me the way of RCS for my zone controller as it offers me many many advanced controls and statuses, but I really liked the RC series by HAI, i never got to the point of homeseer with it as this was before homeseer for me, but the way everyone talks if you want reliable HVAC control without a ton of commerical type controls HAI is the way to go.
