Did you have a chance to try the beta version with the Echo? I added support in there to help rename the Floor/Room globally for a thermostat which helps if you need to move things around to get the phrases like you want. I also have an option to keep the traditional names or to rename the devices to a more Echo friendly version (can pop back and forth with this).

I've put up a new plugin version 3.0.5.0 via the "updater override" method with some improved support. I've only been using the Homeseer Skill so far with my Echo. I did take care to set the Control Use on those devices it applies to. See the sticky thread:

I've started working with the Echo via the Skill method right now. Had some luck. I'm asking a question over in the Echo Skill forum about numerical parsing of "fifty five" seems to be coming in as only 50 (only first word)? Link to that discussion is below.

There's also an image in my post about some slight renaming I'm doing to get reliable responses via the Echo. It appears important that device names and control words don't overlap. So for the setpoints I'm using device names "Cooling" and "Heating" right now as the Mode device has a control "Cool" or "Heat"

Good to hear that you got it. You'll have some fun with it. I am using both the API support and the skill. One has more natural language but the other can do more. I also created a custom skill because I wanted to say "ask the house" instead of "ask HomeSeer". I don't want to ask a brand name, but rather have it sound a bit more normal. I think that you have the path right. It is not instantaneous, but normally pretty fast.

I think the big first step for the thermostat is to get is discoverable for the API and/or the skill. (actually, that may be the only thing)

So my Amazon Echo has arrived and I can do all the cool "day 1" things like ask Alexa to tell a joke or play music etc. Now, I'm starting to delve into the support for Amazon Echo. I upgraded my HS3 test and PROD machines to 3.0.0.258 just today. Seems API vs Skill is an interesting topic. Anyone have the absolute latest, hot off the presses, correct path to go down? Seems both of these rely on the myhs service. Seems I talk to Alexa and she transmits to Amazon which transmits to myhs and finally back to myhs connected PROD HS3 machine? Seems like a long path but maybe with all the voice recognition it's required.

I'm still no closer to answering your original question but did want you to know I'm at least playing with the same cool toys

FYI My Amazon Echo is still on back order. Supposedly it'll be arriving soon but who knows. Will keep you posted.

I'm sorry Tom. I'm brand new to anything Echo related. Clearly HS3 is making updates that other plugins need to adhere to to claim Echo support which is why I decided it was prudent to get one. Also nice to have a shiny new toy I'll let you know once I have it and have a chance to test and make any adjustments that may be needed.

    Nathan,

Do you know what Rich means by "Control Use" in the following? I was assuming it was property set on the device when it is created. Is that property set on the thermostat devices. I presume it was something down this path as I think without this the devices don't get discovered.

Ok, my Amazon Echo has been ordered. They're not in stock until 3/29 so claims delivery by 4/1 and we all know what day that is

I'll see what I can see once I have it and can start working with Skill/API and why the plugin may not be responding as desired. I'd only be guessing at this point.

I couldn't get voice control to work either. I had started a thread over in the Echo Skill section before finding this thread

    Hi Tom.

I haven't looked at adding support specifically for the Echo as I don't have one (yet). I'll look at that other thread and see if there's anything I can suggest.

How to add voice control for Amazon Echo

I tried adding voice control for the root device and echo didn't discover it. I tried adding voice control for the head and cool devices, but that would be discovered either. Any suggestions?
