Exceded inactivity period and failed poll

My HS3 network is working well.

I have a bunch of Aeon range extenders, and they all show up as "Exceded inactivity period and failed poll" even though they pass a connectivity test. I do want to be notified if one drops off, but how do I fix it so that under normal circumstances, they don't fail and give me a false positive on the SDJ report?

I also have one of those combo motion/light/temp sensors and it's working great but reports "No status", and SDJ fails it with "Passed activity scan but Invalid State". Again, I want to know if it really disappears off the network, but I don't want it failed for whatever weird status code it's giving under normal conditions. What's the best way to do that?

I don't have any range extenders. How are they represented in HS? A single root device or do they have any child/features?

If the plug-in is polling them, then it means that HS is reporting that they can be polled for status. However, I suspect in reality they can't be polled, which is why they fail. You could test this by doing a manual poll from the HS web interface and see what happens. If the root, and/or any children/features if they have any, don't update their time stamp and they don't respond to a poll then there isn't anything that can be done from a plug-in to test them. The Z-Wave plug-in doesn't expose the 'Test Connectivity' function to be used from scripting or other plug-ins. If the above is the case then I would just exclude them from the scan by selecting them in the list of devices to be excluded.

HS puts a device in 'Invalid State' if it doesn't receive a valid response from the device when it controls it. This doesn't necessarily mean that the device didn't receive and act on the command, just that a successful acknowledgement didn't get back to HS within the timeout period. This is usually an indication of communication issues on a network. I would normally suggest investigating why you are getting these but If you want to ignore them just deselect the 'Check for Invalid State' for the particular interface on the SDJ-Health General Devices page.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks Steve! It's a single root, no children/features. How do I manually Poll it? I can see how to Test Connectivity, but how do I manually Poll? It is true that there's no "last change" value shown, does that mean it's hopeless to try to monitor them?

      > Deselect the 'Check for Invalid State' for the particular interface on the SDJ-Health General Devices page.

so this is global for all devices, right - can't set it for a specific device(s)?

Make sure on your device that this is NOT checked:

To manually poll individual devices setup an event like below. In your case, make sure you select root devices. Manually run the event.

Check your device again after running the event and hopefully there should be a last change timestamp update.

To manually poll just click on the icon with a capital ‘A’ in HS4 list view.

          You probably can’t monitor them.

The Invalid State check is per interface not per device. So you can turn it off for Z-Wave say but on for other technologies.

hmm the interface you're showing is HS4, right? I'm running HS3 and I don't recognize where this would be.

Which part? The device features (first image) or events (second image)?

                mlevin77 .
To manual poll a device in HS3 is similar to HS4 but the icon is different, it is a blue icon showing an antenna with radiating waves. Filter your Device List to just show the devices you want to poll then click the manual poll icon in the little row of icons near the top right of the screen.

                    That's interesting.

If you are prepared to pursue this further could you do the following for me:
                    • Set Device Ref numbers to be displayed if not already set. I can't remember where this is in HS3 but probably on the Custom tab of the SetUp menu.
                    • Filter your device page so it just showing the 4 devices, as the poll results in the quoted post, and post a screenshot.
                    • Click on the Poll icon again and post the results to see if they are identical to the previous post.
                    • Go to the 'Plug-ins>SDJ-Health>Plug-in Config' page and select LogLevel=2 for debugging.
                    • Go to the 'Plug-ins>SDJ-Health>General Devices' page and click on the 'Run' button on the Z-Wave interface section to manually run a scan of Z-Wave devices.
                    • Wait for the scan to complete which might take a while depending on what you have the minimum interval between polls set to.
                    • Go back to the 'Plug-ins>SDJ-Health>Plug-in Config' page and select LogLevel=1 or 0, up to you.
                    • Post your log between the entries for the LogLevel being changed to 2 and back to 1.
                    Thanks,
                    Steve

                        Thanks for that.

First thing to note is that HS is representing 2 of the devices differently to the other 2, even though they are all Aeon repeaters. Are they all the same version of the device? Did you notice anything different when you included the 4 devices into your network?

The results of the manual HomeSeer poll show the 2 devices (#308, #314) with 'No Status' returning a (Status is: 0) and the two devices showing a Status of 'Off' (#5, #373) failing with (Status isResult not set by Plugin)). I suspect in reality HomeSeer isn't actually polling any of these devices.

Looking at the debug log from the SDJ-Health scan I can see that attempts are made to poll the 2No devices (#5, #373), both of which fail, but not the other 2No devices (#308, #314). This will be because the Z-Wave plug-in reports that 2 of the devices can be polled and 2 can't be. SDJ-Health checks this before attempting a poll. If you click on a device, then on the Z-Wave tab, then on the little down arrow next to 'Information about Node ??', you will see 'Supports Status' with Yes or No. Yes means that the Z-Wave plug-in says the device can be polled, No says it can't.

For some reason HomeSeer has registered 2 of your devices differently to the other 2. Perhaps included with a different version of the Z-Wave pi or just that you wearing a different colour shirt at the time

All the above is a bit by the by as whatever HomeSeer is reporting it can't actually poll these devices. The 'Result=8: Value=-5' returned to SDJ-Health by the Z-Wave poll could mean anything but I am pretty sure you would get the same result even if you unplugged the device.

The upshot of the above is that the plug-in isn't going to be able to determine the state of the devices by polling, even the two that report that they can be polled.

One last chance is the LastChange time which is currently blank. Have you tried TC1 's suggestion of deselecting the 'Last Change Time updates on Status Change only' from the device Advanced tab and then doing a poll. I don't think it will make any difference but worth a try.

As I said before I would exclude these devices from the scan as you aren't going to get any useful information from SDJ-Health on them.

they are not the same model - 2 are old, 2 are newer.

no, sorry, I can't find the Advanced tab - where would that be on HS3?

In HS3 I think it was the 'Configuration' tab.

Click on a device in your devices view. The 'Configuration' should be the default tab, but if not select it.

It is worded slightly different in HS3
'Do not update device last change time if device value does not change'
                            Deselect it.

ah got it, done. I polled again, same result, nothing listed in Last Change.
