Is Ultraview 2 GUI ready for HS2? I have checked the board and cannot seem to see the answer

Ultra View2 GUI has been completly re-written using VB.Net and ASP.Net. The client side scripts (still jscript and vbscript) and the configuration tool have also been re-written. At the moment, only the floorplan of Ultra View2 is working. I have not converted the Ultra View2 Status yet.

I am still undecided on how it will be released (e.g. payed vs paypal donation). At the moment, I am leaning towards the paypal donation. If you use it, then consider supporting the author via a donation via paypal. Thoughts?

I used it everyday on 1.x I would certinly agree to your approach.

Hopefully after a short trial period maybe?

I like the paypal approch....Homeseer is not supporting or helping with any of the plugins, I would much rather donate to the author than paying more to Homeseer.

May seem alittle cold but, thats my take.

Yea! on the first part.

As far as the second part, I whole-heartedly believe that this is an excellent product well worth a set price (I would buy!). The only problem that might pop up is attrition by people that don't want to pay. If the number of installs goes down enough, you might not find that it gets enough attention from the public for you to want to continue development. I know that I speak for a lot of us when I say that it would be a shame.

Back in the early days of BBSes (sp?), I had the second biggest board in Dallas for several years. Well, the boards that were distributing porn started charging and started making money hand over fist. I didn't have any porn, but I had hundreds of regular users, a number of whom called from other countries. I had two phone lines and was getting 70-80 calls a day, I had one of the biggest shareware libraries in the country, tons of games, 9600kbs (yeah, I know..) and was a primary FidoNet hub with an Internet messaging gateway before most people knew what the Internet was. Hell, I was even in the default ProComm dialing list. Well, I figured that I had enough regulars that I could start charging a nominal fee ($15 a year) to help offset the cost of the two phone lines, more storage space and the countless sleepless nights I spent getting FidoNet working when it broke.

By the time the fee kicked in, I had dropped to 20-30 calls a day and it went down from there. I few very devoted users noticed this and sent in some very generous donations, but it was too late.

So there you go.. you have every right to charge for your software.. it is excellent and I couldn't picture living without it. I don't know what your install base numbers are but consider that you *might* get more from a few very happy users than a set price from all. Most people don't donate after they have already paid for a product. On the other hand, you can ask for donations and if it is going well, consider charging later, giving the people that donated (a reasonable amount) a free license, although you risk alienating some of the people that donated more than your asking price.

Software tends to be demand and supply as opposed to supply and demand. You have to decide what your user base can bear.

I've never had the opportunity to use it but I have read many good things. I'd definately donate via paypal. That would be an easy decision just based on the high praises I've read.

I'm not so sure about paying through HS though. That would NOT be an easy decision. Strange, I know. But like others, I'm feeling the sting of the whole HS plugin charge debate. I'm sure someone is thinking, "Whats the difference?" It's purely ideological on my part.

Any chance you might release the floorplan portion before the status portion is ready?

I'm going to have to go with donations unless you build GUIs to update ultra_view2_xml.inc and all the other files that have to be dinked with by hand. A small amount of file manipulation would probably be acceptable at $30 but I think that you would end up fending off the angry masses that did not realize how much work has to go into customizing UV2 until after they bought it. New devices are the biggest pain but should be able to be delt with fairly easily with interfaces (GUI or CHUI).

On the other hand, I would hate to lose the openess of the program that allows almost infinite customization. My 2 cents.
