Oh nevermind, I see that the value is -2, but the STRING has all that extra info. So, assuming events are comparing the value then I posted too soon. oops. -
There is 2 different page for creating devices.
One is labeled Device Setup and the other is labeled HSTouch.
The Device Setup one is legacy from early versions of weatherXML. It does as you said, puts a bunch of info in the device string. It was used to display in webpages.
The HSTouch devices are designed to provide just the actual data.
Sounds like for what you want, the HSTouch ones would work better for you.--
