Getting started with UPB, seeing some problems

I got a UPB pc interface (serial), and a few switches. I set up the interface on the pc, turned the machine back on, and saw this error in my log:

    <TABLE cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=LOGDateTime0 noWrap align=left>3/12/2007 7:53:23 PM </TD><TD class=LOGType0 align=left colSpan=3>Error </TD><TD class=LOGEntry0 align=left colSpan=8>Initializing interface: UPB->Invalid or non-existant UPStart export file encountered, : System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file 'C:\Program Files\HomeSeer 2\Config\HomeSeer.upe'.File name: 'C:\Program Files\HomeSeer 2\Config\HomeSeer.upe' at Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileSystem.FileOpen(Int32 FileNumber, String FileName, OpenMode Mode, OpenAccess Access, OpenShare Share, Int32 RecordLength) at HSPI_UPB.HSPI.ReadAndParseUPBExportFile(String& FileName)</TD></TR><TR><TD class=LOGDateTime1 noWrap align=left>3/12/2007 7:53:23 PM </TD><TD class=LOGType1 align=left colSpan=3>UPB </TD><TD class=LOGEntry1 align=left colSpan=8>Writing to error log file - C:\Program Files\HomeSeer 2\Config\UPB Error Report.Log</TD></TR><TR><TD class=LOGDateTime0 noWrap align=left>3/12/2007 7:53:23 PM </TD><TD class=LOGType0 align=left colSpan=3>UPB </TD><TD class=LOGEntry0 align=left colSpan=8>***:Invalid or non-existant UPStart export file encountered, : System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file 'C:\Program Files\HomeSeer 2\Config\HomeSeer.upe'.File name: 'C:\Program Files\HomeSeer 2\Config\HomeSeer.upe' at Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileSystem.FileOpen(Int32 FileNumber, String FileName, OpenMode Mode, OpenAccess Access, OpenShare Share, Int32 RecordLength) at HSPI_UPB.HSPI.ReadAndParseUPBExportFile(String& FileName)</TD></TR><TR><TD class=LOGDateTime1 noWrap align=left>3/12/2007 7:53:23 PM </TD><TD class=LOGType1 align=left colSpan=3>UPB </TD><TD class=LOGEntry1 align=left colSpan=8>Problem with UPB export file record: </TD></TR><TR><TD class=LOGDateTime0 noWrap align=left>3/12/2007 7:53:23 PM </TD><TD class=LOGType0 align=left colSpan=3>Info </TD><TD class=LOGEntry0 align=left colSpan=8>Initializing Plug-in: UPB</TD></TR><TR><TD class=LOGDateTime1 noWrap align=left>3/12/2007 7:53:23 PM </TD><TD class=LOGType1 align=left colSpan=3>UPB </TD><TD class=LOGEntry1 align=left colSpan=8>RegisterCallback Completed</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I also have a few other questions:
    1. I was reading the instructions for the interface, it talked about putting the module in message mode, instead of pulse mode. do I need to do that?
    2. final quesiton: Can I plug my upb interface into the pass through on my CM11a (or vice versa)?

    Thanks,
    Ian

    Configuring with UPStart

To get started with Homeseer and UPB you need to use the UPStart software to configure your UPB switches. Then you need to export a "UPE" file to where Homeseer will find it. I called mine Homeseer.upe and exported it to c:\program files\homeseer 2\ which by the messages you posted is what HS expects.

I've used my UPB PIM via the pass through without any problems.

I downloaded the software, and upon running it, I unearthed another question! in the "adding devices" section of the wizard, it says my devices should be installed and powered up. they are, but I haven't configured them per the instructions they came with yet...should I do that first, or will this wizard do that for me?

      Thanks,
      Ian

The wizard will assist you in that, or you can do it one by one.

Basically, click 5 times fast on a switch to put it into setup mode. In UPStart, add a device, label it, set settings, etc. Then save it, and export the file as "homeseer.upe" in the HS2 directory.

There is a configuration switch in the options of UPStart to auto-export on save, and to auto-save on exit. That's discussed in another thread in this forum.

Once you get past the first one, it goes pretty quick

Below is a procedure similar to what I use. I almost always do this with HS and the UPB plug-in running.
          1. Install UPB device(s).
          2. Go to UPB Plug-in configuration and select option to pause UPB plug-in.
          3. Minimize browser and start UPStart.
          4. For each newly installed UPB device, put the device in Setup mode (per device instructions) and add device to UPStart.
          5. When done adding new devices, export HomeSeer.upe to HomeSeer config folder. Note that newer versions of UPStart allow auto-export upon exiting UPStart once you have done the export procedure once.
          6. Go back to browser and unpause the UPB plug-in.
Note that the UPB devices do not have to actually be physically installed in final location. You could connect them up on your workbench, get them set up, and install in final location later. The devices will retain their configuration.

Got it setup, and was even able to use the ac rf plugin to "shadow" the old x10 addresses, enabling my cheapy peel and stick 3 channel/dimmer to control the original x10 devices that had been giving me such grief! I'm in bliss now!

I must ammend my last statement - the wall stick remote is able to turn the switches on/off, with the shadowing in the ac rf plugin, but not the dimming. any way to do that?
