    TED The Energy Detective

I bought one of these back when it was a topic of discusssion. I think at the time someone said it was supposed to be able to connect to a PC in the future. I called a few weeks ago and was told that this model will not have that capability , however a future model will. Has anyone else who purchased one of these unit heard anything different? I love this unit, but would like to be able to connect it to the PC for logging and such.

The RFXMeter is a real power usage meter and is supported by Homeseer.

Use the xAP connector or the ACRF or ACRF2 plug-in.

The RFXCOM 433.92 receiver is also able to receive the Cent-a-meter also called Electrisave. But this is not a power usage meter because it only a power indicator that transmits the power currently used.

      Bert,
What more would the user need to interface that system listed to his automation PC?

        Rupp,

For the RFXMeter to measure the 2 phases of a 120V/60Hz network:
        - The ACRF plug-in or ACRF2 plug-in or xAP connector
        - 1 RFXMeter +2 RFXPwr http://www.wingsnwakes.com/product_d...=66&item_id=21
        - 1 RFXCOM 433.92MHz receiver
        ----- or USB http://www.wingsnwakes.com/product_d...=64&item_id=23
----- or LAN or WLAN http://www.rfxcom.com/receivers.htm#70003

For the RFXMeter to measure up to 3 phases of a 230V/50Hz network:
        - The ACRF plug-in or ACRF2 plug-in or xAP connector
        - 1 RFXMeter +1, 2 or 3 RFXPwr http://www.rfxcom.com/sensors.htm#PowerMeter
        - 1 RFXCOM 433.92MHz USB, LAN or WLAN receiver http://www.rfxcom.com/receivers.htm#70003

For the Electrisave / Cent-a-meter solution:
        - The xAP connector
        - An Electrisave or Cent-a-meter with up to 3 Current sensors.
        - 1 RFXCOM 433.92MHz USB, LAN or WLAN receiver http://www.rfxcom.com/receivers.htm#70003

          Rupp,

I forgot to mention the free charting software that runs in HS2.
Download RFXCOM_charts.zip which is available at the bottom of this web page http://www.rfxcom.com/downloads.htm

I had a TED when it first came out and in general was happy with it as a standalone unit. I eventually returned it as the upgrade for the PC interface did not materialize when originally scheduled. It has been a few years since I had it, but it seems to me that the update interval was measured in minutes rather than seconds. With the PC interface this again becomes an attractive option depeding upon update rate and accuracy requirements.

I did consider the RFXCOM unit, but for a 400 amp service this was a rather expensive solution ($510 for Meters and CTs + $125 for receiver). There is also the tradeoff between update interval and battery life so depeding upon use expectations this may be an issue.

The direction I went was with the WattNode which gave me a 400 Amp (4 mains), an update rate of 2 Hz, resolution of 0.6 amps (lightbulb) and accuracy of 1%. Cost was in the middle $300 dollar range. I continue to use line charts that show both current utilization rate and daily accumulation such as the attached.

Ted would not work with ACT CR234

I purchased and have returned a TED. When I got it the PC interface was not available ( they did say it was coming). This was in November, 2007 just a month ago. Did not matter much as I could not get it to transmit through the CR234 ( works to good ). I could hook it up in the same outlet and it worked fine, but from the service box it could not get through the ACT CR234. When I asked to return it they mentioned they have problems when X10 is being used. They said that a new version was in design that would work with X10. The PC interface is great to have but, a plugin to HomeSeer would be better

                  TED The Energy Detective

I recently acquired the Model 1002 TED with the Footprints software. The 1002 provides 4 x CT's. Installation was simple and I can receive the combined input on the TED display (believe called the RDU). However, the software used to display a cumulative log (and produce some graphs, output to Excel, etc) has yet to function. I have tried 4 x unique installationswith both XPSP2 and Vista...none have installed correctly nor remotely behaved as per the instructions provided (they display the process you are to follow multiple times during the installation).

I believe it was just released prior to XMAS and then the holidays, so have only had a few "working day" opportunities to contact them. But so far they have not responded to my emails (with installation results and screen captures) nor to telephone messages. May need to wait till after new year to get anyone.

Will be glad to update the forum if my experience is of any interest. I realize this is not directly to topic of this forum.

Yes, please do! I've been trying to contact TED folks since Friday (email and voice mail) as well to see if TED will work for me (setup described here http://board.homeseer.com/showthread.php?t=125341).

David, if you have your TED 2002 handy, would it be possible for you to measure the inside diameter of the CT? If it's at least 21mm, then I think it should work for me.

You aren't by chance using it with either X10 or UPB are you? I have X10 isolated to specific circuits (using Lightolier Compose firewalls) so I could probably keep the TED comms and X10 separate. However, I don't want to eliminate the option of running UPB on the "non-X10" circuits, so UPB/TED compatibility would be great.

It's a bit discouraging that Footprints isn't fully working. I wonder if TED plans to provide an API / SDK to allow direct integration with other products, such as HomeSeer?

                      Thanks,
                      Don

I've had a TED for about 6 months and it has helped lower usgae by watching it. I to would like to add the sofware.
Only anoying things I've seen is some of my x10 devices false trigger since installing TED.

I am happy that they finally released it as I've had the TED since it first came out. However not very excited about the $98 to upgrade it since I was an early adopter and was promised the ability almost from the start... I was trying to get an early version to be able to write my own HS interface for it and was told several times (over 2 years) they would email me when ready as they were "almost done"... guess not. Now that I'm done complaining, I'll probably buy it at some point as we do find it handy and not worth sinking $$$ into something else.

FYI I received this today based on an email I sent them back in July:

                            Greetings from TED!
We have finally completed development of the PC-Interface software for TED...and we hope you will agree that it was worth waiting for. Check it out on our website: www.theenergydetective.comFor those of you who are interested in a SDK or API, we are working on it and should have it available soon.
Meanwhile, we'd like to thank you for your patience and interest in TED
                            -Mike

DSchoppe...so sorry for delay in reply...got the flu of all things.

The CT is a clamp-on style with an ID of 23 mm. The "max" opening without straining the arms is also 23 mm.

I do not have other devices (such as X-10) on line with the TED.

I believe the holidays have made for poor customer support from the ENERGY folks. I did make contact (via a Google Search) of the Footprints Developer, Pete Arvanitis (http://www.petecode.com/ted.html). He has been extraordinarily helpfull. He determined that the RDU was faulty and made contact with the ENERGY folks to send me a replacement. It is scheduled to arrive today per UPS tracking # provided.

                              Cheers.
