I'd be seriously interested in one of these, however if its a locked down version of CE (I had a Wyse thin client with a very restrictive CE install) then may only be able to install their developed apps...rendering no point in HST.

And then there is no make/model of that device that prevents any proper net research...

If it will run HST I think i'll pop it on the christmas list

I still can't decide, might get an Ipod touch after christmas, at least I know then HST will work on it.

I would save your money. From a review on Maplin's site:

        Minuses:

Internet experience with built in Internet Explorer is limited, and it chokes on large pages like the BBC.
No flash support (except for Coreplayer on YouTube).
No chance to instal other WinCE apps - the ARM processor seems a bit non standard.
No chance to make major changes, as I can't (yet) get a third party registry editor to install :-(
Wi-Fi a little weak, and drains battery (as usual).

review says "touch screen via touch pen." I'd want one that responds to finger, not "pen."
            Plugins:
BLLogMonitor, BLGarbage, BLBackup, BLOutGoingCalls, BLUps, BLRfid, JvEss, DooMotion, Applied Digital Ocelot, AC RF Processor, UltraMon, PJC AVR 430, UPB, Rain8net, DSC Panel, JRiver Media center, Windows Media Player, SageMediaCenter, SnevlCID, MCSTemperature.

I read somewhere that it works fine using a finger.

I bought one of these to try. I copied the clients\ce directory across to it, but when running the exe, I get an error "This application requires a newer version of the Microsoft .NET Compact framework than the version installed on this device".

Running cgacutil shows Microsoft .NET Compact Framework [3.5.7283.0,2.0.7045.0]

I tried downloading the .net 3.5 compact framework from Microsoft, but the device installer said there was already a newer version on the device.

                  Any ideas?

Anyone have any luck with these Maplin CE touchscreens?

Or is Win CE not up to the job??

                        Hi Jon

Would you care to enlighten the less technically gifted as to how you managed it?

It will take a bit of time to sort out what I did and write it up.... but I'll try and do it later this week.

How many people are interested in this?

Yes, interested to see what you did.

General question - how do you rate the device? Is the touchscreen ok? Any issues or dislikes?

                            David

Actually, for the current asking price, it's not bad at all. The screen is bright and clear and can be operated easily by a finger. It looks like quite a few apps will load successfully. The in-built speaker is OK and it does not sound bad through headphones.

IE6 is not the best browser in the world but it functions fine if you know the limitations. You can even set this to full screen mode for web based touchscreen software ;-) The only issue is I have not found a way of getting it out of this mode without a reboot (or plugging in a usb keyboard).
