    2420M Motion sensor questions

After spending half a day trying to figure out this device, I've concluded the following: ANY communication from HS to the 2420M is successful ONLY if the 2420M is in link mode.

So, even for manually adding the 2420M (Tap-add doesn't work), the 2420M needs to be in linking mode. To program the various features of the 2420M (custom settings), it has to be in linking mode. To reread the device's links, it has to be in linking mode.

If this is right, it's a pain: early on, you'll want to experiment with different settings and you'll have to put the device back into linking mode every time. Strange design...

    Can anyone validate my finding?

    Insteon plugin, 2420M custom settings

Is the Sensitivity custom setting related to Night/Day or Detection Range?

Has anyone noticed a real change in brightness after changing the LED Brightness custom setting?

      2420M Motion sensor default values

In the 2420M Custom Settings,it says " (* indicates default setting) ", but I can't see "*" in the pull down lists. What's up?

I'll have to add the asterisk (*)

correct, linking mode is required. and i can't trigger this from the sw, i tried. The device is transmit only in normal operation. link mode is required in order to program or read the device.

from the tech manual regarding Sensitivity
The unit only uses the intensity value when in night-only mode (JP-4) to determine if it is "night". The higher the value, the darker it needs to be for the unit to see night. Default value is 0x23
the led brightness does change but only with large changes to the setting. default is 64

Using the plugin, I have Night Only = Off and I am still getting On/Off commands for (artificially created) day/night transitions.

You mentionned "... tech manual regarding Sensitivity ...". I have a support call outstanding at Skylink; I'm hoping to get more detailed info. What documentation are you referring to?

I have access to to insteon developer documentation, unfortunately i can't share it.

what is the firmware ver of the motion sensor? 82 or greater is the newer one which i am still working on regarding setting the day/night mode via the plugin

have you changed the day/night jumper?

you have a v1 motion sensor, v2 starts at firmware 82.

have you seen the following manual from the smarthome site

                http://www.smarthome.com/manuals/2420mqs.pdf

jp5 doesn't do anything. check jp3 for night only mode

I'm totally confused. My unit has the following sticker on the back: "1610 REV 2.0". I double checked with Smarthome and they say it's a version 2.

I had heard that V2 added the Off count down, which my unit has.

The link to the manual you sent me describes a V1 I believe.

If you follow this link http://www.smarthome.com/2420M/Wirel...-Sensor/p.aspx and go down to "Manuals/Software" then click on the link Prior revision documents, then select "Rev 1.0 Quick Start Guide", you'll find the manual you referred to in your message, but it's 1.0.

My unit's circuit board looks exactly like the one displayed in the current version.

All this doesn't explain why my unit says F/W 32, unless they reset the number with Rev 2.0.

What does the sticker on the back of your unit say?

my V2 sticker says 3809 rev 3.04 hs reports firmware 82

                    m V1 sticker says 1909 Rev 1.2 hs reports firmware 24

my V2 did have a BETA sticker so maybe they did reset the firmware. who knows. I'll send an email to my smarthome contact to verify

please post a screen shot of your motion sensor setup page

All are behaving as expected. Only odd thing is that I've set "On only" and it seems I'm getting an Off from the 2420M (only) when I put it in link mode.

                              Suggestion for debugging

I've been looking back at my logs to validate things. I set and unset 2420M custom settings. I realize now looking back at my logs, even in detailed debug, that there is no entry defining what was actually changed. The only entry is
                              Sending command 02 62 13 EF 65 10 2E 00 00 03 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 to PLM
It's not easy to figure out what changes were sent out to the 2420M, not having the programming documentation, unless one writes down everything.

Would it be feasible to include some litterals in the log describing what changes are being requested, as you do with incoming messages when you describe what the command is, whether its a direct or broadcast, etc.
