    Help with PLM 2413U

Just received 2413, downloaded drivers from SmartHome, shows up in Device manager as COM4, installed latest version of HS. Enabled and saved Insteon Plugin on COM4. Log says initializing plug in, connecting to SmartHome Device Manager (SDM), the SDM did not find your Insteon interface, now scanning com and usb ports for the interface, an error occurred....

If I go the interfaces tab under plug in status it says error initializing. I've tried checking connections, plugging the PLM into different outlets, different USB ports, restarting. I turned off power management on my root hub.

I have no experience using HS with insteon and would appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks in advance.

the 2413u does not required the SDM, please uninstall it.

what version of the Insteon PLM plugin are you using? you do not want any version that indicates PLC or SDM

      Mark,

I am using the latest version that came with HS. I'm not at the HS computer now so I can't check. How should I uninstall SDM?

my guess is you have the last free version 1.4.2 from the updater which is fine to start with.

check the control panel to see if you can uninstall the sdm. otherwise you will need to track down the file (i thinks its called sdm3server.dll) and delete it.

also check your config\startup.txt script to see if there is any indication of sdm files being launched.

sorry to be vague but i never used the sdm sw.

My Insteon plug in version is 1.1.52.1. Regarding the SDM files I can't find any on the computer. In the config\startup there is no reference to SDM. I could restore to a point before I installed the drivers from SmartHome but then which drivers, if any, do I install?

Sorry but I just know nothing about installing this device and the literature is non-existent.

          Thanks

i guess i need to write up a full set of instructions...but for now...

let forget about the sdm and v1.1.52.1 (it way too old)

            1. please go to the updater and download one of the following plugins

Insteon PLM 2412 Plug-in v1.4.2 (the last free version i built for HS; it will not be updated)

            or

Insteon PLM Plug-In v1.5.3 (my current release which requires a license)

            3. shutdown hs

            4. please download and install the latest ftdi chipset drivers from
            http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

this driver will provide the virtual com port that the plugin needs

            5. restart hs and set the com port on the setup/interface page

            6. goto the plugin config page to start adding devices, etc.

            hope this helps

              Mark,

Thanks for the instructions, but I have one question: I downloaded the latest drivers, per your link "CDM20812" that contain 8 items but after extracting the files what do I do with them? None are an application or a .exe file. Sorry but this is beyond my pay grade.

list of files: amd64, i386,Static,ftd2xx.h, ftdibus, ftdibus, ftdiport, ftdiport

              Thanks,

                  forget about the os question.

you need to open your device manager, find the com port in the Ports section and Update the drivers. when it asks, point at the folder where you unzipped the driver files

                    mark,

That didn't work... it said the best drivers were already installed. When I restarted HS2 the same SDM error came up. I just restored to a time before I installed SDM or drivers. I'm going to download your licensed version plugin and install... then what exactly should I do to install the drivers for the 2413U? BTW my os is Win7 32 bit

                      Mark,

Got it to work! But... is there anything out there to explain all the features, buttons, linking etc. in short is there a help manual? How do I set everything up?

                      Thanks for your help

                      Dave

Nice job. I am still interested to know what version of the drivers are running on the virtual serial ports? the old ones (pre 2.8.x) cause a lot of problems.

open the properties of your virtual serial port within device manager and check the driver version.

I had to force the update by selecting all the 'manual' options to get the new drivers to install. the 'recommended' options lead me down the same path as you.

                        there is no updated documentation...sorry.

first you need to register your devices on the Manage Device page. the plugin will create the basic links you need to turn devices on and off from homeseer. all of the settings info is usually avail in the device user guides.

Then, the plugin will allow you to create insteon links between devices so you don't have do to that manually. I will refer you to the device user guides to learn about linking and what it does.

when you plug in the plm usb cable to the computer does the 'new device wizard' come up? if so, you should be able to follow the prompts to have the wizard install the drivers from the directory where you unzipped the ftdi drivers. Don't take the "recommended' options, select the alternative
