AirPort Express line in and auto detect "play"

In research for new multi zoned audio solution, im curious about sonos.

I would like to use an Airport express/airplay as the line in.
Will sonos/your plug-in auto sense if i start playing music from my IOS device thru the airport connected to a sonos player?
If so, i do have a WAF winner (i think). (HS will then be able auto-change source on my Denon receiver)

    Hi Markus,

unfortunately Sonos only generates an event when the audio jack is physically inserted/removed. I'm pretty sure this is just a mechanical switch that opens/closes when the jack is removed/inserted. As far as I know, Sonos has no auto-sensing capability to generate events when actual audio is received or not.

Can't you stream your library directly through the Sonos player? Or can the iTunes plugin perhaps help turn on the AMP?

That is unfortunate. We jave a music service called Wmp, a spotify competitor, in norway that sonos do not support, and this would be a work around. And its just waf and kids friendly to use the phone and ipad.

I do not think the itunes plugin will sense airplay beeing used.

Lets hope sonos will suport wimp then.

I've found in my set up that this is not true, and that an audio signal can and will trigger autoplay (I am presuming this is the event you speak of). I've got several devices (CD Player, Radio Tuner, PC) that all start Sonos autoplay at the initiation of an audio signal. I do need to say that this isn't 100% reliable. It seems that if I start and stop a source in a short time period, it does not always work (it could be a cheap and flaky dacs that I use on two of the sources; the analog one works better.)

          Hi Club Chapin,

the player starts by itself (maybe it actually never stops), what I was referring to is that the Sonos player does not generate any event via its UPnP interface when you start/stop audio input, the only event the player generates is when the audio jack gets inserted/removed. In order for the plug-in to generate a trigger that turns an amp on/off, the Sonos player must first generate an event, else there is nothing the plug-in can do.
It has been a while since I tested and coded up some of these functions, since then two major SW upgrades were released for the players, who knows, maybe something got added but I doubt it else the triggers would (should ) work.

          Thanks for the posting.

Understood. It's unfortunate it operates this way. Seems like if it can start/stop from audio, it should be able to create a same (or different) event from a plug detect.
