    Replacement thermostat

I believe a thermostat will be the next item I add to my home automation.

Currently we have a Honeywell thermostat (just a basic thermostat with no frills).

What do I need to know before I begin to look for a Z-wave compatible replacement thermostat?

Is there a huge difference between thermostats or if I find one that works is it about as good as any other that will work for me?

I my opinion the old adage "You get what you pay for" holds true for tstats. The Trane thermostat is one of the best stats. There's also a brand new stat out by Honeywell that is a direct replacement for the touch screen stats. It "should" work with HomeSeer but as far as I know no one has tested one yet and the crew hasn't had time to get one to test with.

I have tested it, and it does work correctly with HomeSeer.

        Thanks for the replies.

        I know nothing about thermostats.

Are there differences in wiring (like I found out my wall switches do not have a neutral wire) or anything else I need to know about my current thermostat before I get a z-wave replacement?

I'd definitely recommend that you take your current thermostat off the wall and look at how it's wired. You can then compare it to "standard" wiring as illustrated by the manufacturer of the thermostat(s) you are considering. (Also do a search on 'thermostat wiring'.) It is not uncommon for the person wiring the thermostat to ignore 'standard' color codes, but if you note which color wire connects to what terminal on your present thermostat, then making the same connection on your new one will probably work. If it's really confusing once you open it up, take a picture and post it. I'm sure someone here can help interpret what you have.

i have the ca8900 as seen here
            http://www.amazon.com/Intermatic-CA8.../dp/B001FB5XLE

and at about 2.5x less the cost... (i paid $89 new)

on the wiring.. yes i would take it apart and look.. i know i had to run a new wire set as i was missing one wire.. the white one.. common??? but without it I ate up AA batteries which should be used for power outages..i think....

I couldn't have said it better and for many of us this is a direct replacement.

I have one of these, except it is not the new version which is Zwave in my vacation house near Chattanooga. It is a nice one, and love it's features. It's a dual heat system. I would like two for my house in Atlanta.
