    Best Z-Troller Position?

    Greetings,
In the process of troubleshooting my Yale locks, which eventually led to my purchasing a second z-troller, I had made a call to Homeseer to check on z-troller stock availability. While talking about my issues, a question was raised, "How is your primary z-troller mounted?" A bit perplexed, I said, "Well, it's connected to my Hometroller S3 with a six inch or so cable that came with z-troller, so... it kinda just lays on top of Hometroller. No much room for anything else".

To that, the answer was that "...mounting it vertically would be better and would improve z-wave transmission". If z-troller behaves like an antenna then, I suppose, that makes sense. One wouldn't want to lay the antenna down flat. On the other hand, z-troller looks and feels like a handheld device, with not much support in its design for any kind of mounting - vertical or horizontal. Moreover, that blinking hand controller is not something I would want to stick up onto a wall with a piece of Velcro, for example.

What do the rest of z-troller users do? Any thoughts on what an ideal position and, while we are at it, location in the house should be?

As always, your experience and suggestions are much appreciated.

I mounted one of mine vertically with velcro about 7' high inside my wiring closet.
The other is lying horizontally about 8' high on a shelf.

I've wondered what the internal antenna orientation is...

Since they said to mount it vertically, I presume that is the antenna orientation as well...

The one on the right is held up with velcro. The one on the left just sits on top of a shelf.

How long is the cable that goes from the Z-Troller to the Serial port?

The left one is short - maybe 6"
The right one is a long cable - maybe 4'

What type of long cable did you use? I tried using the extension that comes with z-troller (a few feet long) and when it is connected, z-troller never registers. As sson as I disconnect the extension and connect directly to the 6" shorty cable -- works fine...

It was the extension cable that came with the z-troller.
It sounds like you might have a bad cable.

My HA closet is actually the area under the stairs in our unfinished basement storage room. The HS PC is on the concrete floor. My Z-troller is hanging via it's power and serial cables from a nail in one of the 2x4 studs directly above the PC. It's connected to the edgeport serial via a 15ft RS232 cable. So it is vertical, and about 7 ft off the floor. The problems I've had over the years are pretty clearly not an issue with the Z-troller comms, so I guess that position works well.
