Does this stat work with a dual stage heating system? Come to think of it, how does dual stage heat work? Is this a function of of the stat or the furnace itself? The dual stage I'm speaking of (in my limited knowledge) is where the fan and unit come on at "full blast" when the temp is turned up and then after a few minutes blows at a much lower rate.

There is a connection available on the RCS txb16 which supports this. As well, the connection has to be made at the furnace too. Problem is that some of the new furnaces - in my case Carrier, override this based on the furnaces computer calculation. In the Carrier case, when you call for heat, it will by default start in stage 1 (low). If after so many minutes it doesn't detect a sharp enough rise in temp, it will call for stage 2 (high).

I'd been looking at this to gear up some heat in my garage.
From what I see, these radio thermostats make the decision based on the difference between actual and setpoint. That difference is configurable within limits. So, if (Set - Act) > +X degrees, it switches on Stage 2 until the difference is less than X, then reverts to Stage 1 until Act >= Set.

Wadenut has it right. You need a dual stage stat. Single stage just has on "on." Dual stage stats have two, kind of like low and high and you can configure the degree difference between stage 1 and stage 2.
