    Nest Protect Only?

If I install only a Nest Protect, will it still update hs3 with home/away status, or do I need to have a thermostat as well to define this?

Thinking of getting one soon, but I'm interested in making use of this feature and the protect could be a more cost effective method to start using it as I'm building my system out in parts.

    Thanks,
    Reed

Pretty sure you need the thermostat.

Auto-Away is a function of the T-stat and the protect just sends motion events detected to the t-stat to cancel auto away or keep it from setting if the protect is in a better location for detecting presence than the thermostat.

Motion events are still not visible to the API (and probably won't be, i don't think they are even being sent back to nest due to frequency of them), so the only way to hook auto-away events is when the t-stat goes into that mode locally and then updates the cloud and in turn the api.

I guess ORNVM is right, I don't have a Nest Protect to confirm though

If you have one it's easy to test: in your home.nest.com account if the home/away status is never automatically updated by the Nest protect, then I guess you need a thermostat for this to work.

Cool, thx. I'm actually thinking I may forgo the nest idea though. I'm controlling three baseboard heaters in a three bedroom apartment and I want to automate turning the heat off in rooms that aren't occupied. I'm planning to use motion and door sensors to determine whether the room is occupied, and if the door is open to another room that is currently being heated. The more I thought about it, nest isn't really the best option for that. It's elegant, and simple, but probably better suited for a centralized system and/or spaces that aren't compartmentalized and heated separately. Still though, hard to resist such a sexy little gadget.
