    ChromeCast Audio

    Really intriguing announcement today.

    http://www.engadget.com/2015/09/29/g...omecast-audio/

Could this replace Sonos and Squeezebox? A plugin with HomeSeer might have some great potential.

What are the D/A specs? That's one of the strong points of Sonos and Squeezebox. Is it tailored for highly compressed mp3s on phones?

This is just a wifi device, I would think the support would have to be for the app sending the audio. Google Play or Spotify to name a couple of apps mentioned to work initially with the device.

Probably not perfectly. My old airport expresses never would sync right and being WiFi these probably won't either. You get what you pay for

Correct, Homeseer would have to send the audio to Chromecast through wifi or myHomeseer interface. It would be nice to have a way to switch between Chromecast devices using Homeseer (ie bedroom, living room) and have a default selection. If the Amazon Echo can be used as a speaker with Homeseer then perhaps Chromecast Audio can work.

I have a regular Chromecast and it can play music on my TV from Pandora and other services that use the developer tools Google provides for adding the functionality to your product. I have seen the developer tools web site before but it is beyond my expertise.

My Chromecast works very well for everything except for casting video direct from the PC which is spotty at times. Photos and audio have been no problem and Netflix works great on the Chromecast.

Mine does as well but he was referring to syncing more than one Chromecast at the same time.

Personally love the Chromecast and looking forward to the new one arriving tomorrow.

                          My experience

It's been a week or so, and no one has posted their experiences, so here's what I'm doing with the two Chromecast Audio devices I ordered on launch day.

Before receiving my new toys I read with great sadness that Google will not launch multi-room synchronized playback until "later this fall". Still, knowing it is coming, and never having the skills to convince my better half that we needed to fill the house with Sonos equipment, this seems like it could become the affordable whole-home audio solution I've been hoping for.

Anyway, I received my two units on Monday, and I've got them both in use. Setup was simple, as expected. I plugged the power cable into the CC Audio, 3.5mm to RCA cable from the CCA to my surround sound receiver, and launched the Chromecast app on my Android. The new device showed up immediately on the "Devices" tab, indicating it needed to be set up. This consisted of pressing next 3-4 times and confirming I heard the test audio on my connected speakers. All went well, but that was the easy install.

For my next trick, I had to do a little monkeying around in the attic. I wanted to use Chromecast Audio in the main bathroom, as the bluetooth speaker we had been using was not convenient at all. So I dug out the 2 channel amplifier I've had laying around from a project I abandoned a year or two back. I mounted this in my walk-in closet where my bedroom A/V equipment is, and ran speaker wire across the attic to the bathroom ceiling, where I mounted an in-ceiling speaker (left over from another abandoned project - music in the shed). So at a cost of $35 and some left-behind parts, I now have VERY impressive sound in the bathroom. My only other concern in this setup was power drain by the amp while the speakers are silent. So in my closet I added a zwave appliance module to power down the amp when not in use.

At this point there are two things I'm missing to make this a perfect setup. One, the previously mentioned software update to enable synchronized multi-room playback. Two, a way for either homeseer on my PC, or Tasker on one of the MANY android devices in my home to detect when something is/is not being Cast(ed) to any given Chromecast Audio. This will allow me to automate power on/off on the mini amp for the bathroom, and input change on the surround receiver for the livingroom and bedroom.

Anyone else love Chromecast Audio yet???

I only ordered one to try out right now. Waiting for the whole house syncing to get added before buying a few more.

I'm using it in my woodshop with an older surround sound system. This little thing kicks some serious butt! So far I've cast Google Play from my phone and also SiriusXM radio from a chrome browser on my desktop. Both worked perfectly and sound amazing.

                              Definitely recommend it.
