within the plugin on the device page, there is a swap/replace device routine. you need to have the new device installed and the old one offline. the routine will update links as necessary.

you can run it more than once if it doesn't finish successfully the first time.

Perfect - I did locate the swap routine. It worked best by going to the old device and replaced with the new one. Thanks Mark.

yes, the swap is started from the existing device. there is no need to register the replacement device just reference it. Sounds like you got it working.

I have the same problem. Just to be clear on how to replace a defective device with a new but identical device.

          1. Physically remove defective device and rewire new device in place.
          2. Edit the old device in the plug-in

(the old defective device will still be there in plugin software even though physically removed, is that right?)

          3. Click on "replace this device" as the way of adding the new device to replace the old.

(I do not add the new device like I would do if it were for some new function say I was adding a new light to my house using "tap add new insteon devices")

What I am asking is the "replace this device" is also how I add the new device, right?

            1. yes
            2. no, do not change anything about the device manually
            3. yes, the plugin will update links, etc from the old device with the new device.

all that said, if the new 4 digit devicetype code (see ini) is different, then the plugin may not pickup the new settings and features.

give the sway a try, and see. but you may need to delete the old device from the plugin, and then register the new device. you will of course have to revise events, etc.
