    Random 'All Lights On' Anomaly

    Gurus,

Every few days or so most of the 89 Insteon devices in and outside of the house randomly turn on simultaneously. They include my whole house fan and can be almost scary. I have interrogated my HS log and found no consistent clues as to where the command is coming from. I've created an Insteon dump file and picked through the events but again found nothing consistent (though frankly all that raw data is very mysterious). I've tried reprogramming and replacing the Insteon interface and the issue persists. I've looked through all the device and interface links (hundreds) looking for anything unusual, again nothing that looks like it might be responsible.

It started a few months ago after I had an Insteon Powerlinc fail and I used the interface replace command, it took a while to reprogram all the links and this issue surfaced some time later.

I can only conclude one of my devices is firing a random "All Lights On" command that is not being seen or logged by the interface, but it's just a theory.

Any suggestions about how I could go about debugging this one, any tips on what to look for? I could try disconnecting each device one by one and waiting a week each to see if the issue goes away, but it would take months.

    Cheers,

    Leo

do you know if the Global group is getting triggered, or the default Group 0 used to register i2sc devices?

      Mark,

Thanks for taking an interest in my case. I have a few Insteon groups programmed one very large one with 148 participants that I thought might be erroneously triggering, however more devices than those programmed in that group are anomalously turning on so it is not obvious that group is the culprit.

I don't know how to answer if it might be the default group 0? Would it show up in the Insteon debug log?

      Thanks,

      Leo

any device that has a protocol of i2cs has a group 0 link.

can you summarize the devicetypes that did not turn on?

I'll wait until it happens again and conduct a survey, it might be a few days. I'll check the list against device type and version.

          Cheers!

I'm having the same issue. It happened a few weeks ago and again this morning. How do I find out if any devices are using the default group '0"? Also, what is the significance of the group number? I'm not currently using groups to trigger events because I found it to be unreliable. I seem to have much better event response from devices that are listed individually in the event.

all i2cs devices are linked to the plm via Group 0. But there are no UI or event actions options to trigger this group. All Lights are registered to Group 254 9global group). you can delete the Global group links if you want.

i wonder if noise is messing up a legitimate msg and causing this. I have seen noise change a device group number and thus i get an error in the log because of an unknown group.

From the few times it's happened (including the several instances of all three of my garage door operating simultaneously), these occurrences appear to be coincidental with normal events. I have verified this with video surveillance. Can HS events create "noise"?

I do get "unreferenced group" references in log files and in device link reads regularly. I delete these links but they recreate themselves soon afterwards. Here is an example from one devices link table:

                Device Link Table

Link #4 Outlet controls Living Room Keypad Ceiling Light Button H (0A.D6.C0)
Link #2 Outlet has local control reporting to HomeSeer
Link #3 Outlet is controlled by Living Room Keypad Ceiling Light Button H (0A.D6.C0) - On Level : On
Link #6 Outlet is controlled by Kitchen Keypad Ceiling Pot Lights Button C (0A.AD.2C) - On Level : On
Link #7 Outlet is controlled by Kitchen Keypad Ceiling Pot Lights Button H (0A.AD.2C) - On Level : On
Link #5 Outlet is controlled by HomeSeer using RF PLM Group #254 (HomeSeer All Devices Group) - On Level : On
Link #1 Outlet is controlled by HomeSeer using RF PLM Group #42 (Bad Link Entry, unreferenced group #) - On Level : On

do you have a group #42 in your insteon groups?

can you post an hs log around the time when the video surveillance captured the problem

I'm not currently using any groups. I tried using them a while back as a reference to trigger events but found them unreliable in that not all devices responded to the event commands. (It's likely because I don't know how to use the groups feature.)

I'll look for the logs 'caught on tape' and post them when I find them.

the plugin doesn't recreate links on its own. Not sure what is causing the red link above to get recreated. do you run other insteon software, insteon plugins or controllers?

group 42 might be associated with a kpl. can you check your kpl links? also look in the insteon.ini for

                          group link ?=42

where ? could be any number

There is no reference to 'Group 42' in the KPL links.

In Insteon.ini, the only references to group links are entries of "GroupLinkAddress"es with values from 1 to 40.

Do you want me to post either of these?

are you running any other insteon software?
