backing up everything in Homeseer program folder on computer

Is backing up everything I have done with HS3 as easy as copying HS3 program folder on to a flash drive. So in the event I mess something up or delete everything can I just install my saved HS3 folder from a flash drive and overwrite the HS3 folder that would be there after I have done a system restore??

If this would work than would all my changes to status graphics for devices, events, etc.. all work from a saved copy of HS3 program folder after a system restore was done?

Yes, it will work. It is best to shut down HomeSeer before the backup to make sure you get a clean copy of the database. It will work without a shutdown, but there could be database inconsistencies. If it is Windows you can use a backup program that supports VSS so you get a consistent snapshot even when it is running.

Also worth having a look at BLBackup plugin.

I use it as one of several backup mechanisms and it works very well. I tested a disaster recovery with a BLBackup copy of the HomeSeer directory last year and it worked perfectly.

I run BLBackup twice a day. I also use Micirum Reflect for imaging my entire HomeSeer server nightly (full once a month and incremental nightly) and use Microsoft synctoy to mirror my HomeSeer directory to a backup VM weekly.

I also do a manual backup, just before any update of a plug-in or the HS3 core.

          Randy,

Which edition of Micirum do you run? Interested and looking for a new ghosting solution.

Here I have HS3 for linux running on an RPI.

I use BLBackup to backup the HS3 directory and write the compressed file to a folder that I keeps 10 days of backups. I have been having a little trouble with deleting files that are >10 days old within BLBackup.

I then have a bash script that saves the newest compressed file to my NAS. I have a bash script on the NAS that counts the backup files and deletes the 31st file.

Lastly, I use win32 disk imager to create a complete image of the OS every time I make a major change. I keep the last three images on MY NAS.

I use the free version. It doesn't include incremental image backups, only differential. Since so little changes on the backup the differential backups are fairly small.

I incorrectly wrote incremental in the post above, but it is differential.

Take a look at drivesnapshot.de and Andy's of batch file. Fast, small and reliable

Been using drivesnapshot here for over 15 years. I started to utilize it when I switched over to using Windows 2003 standard for Homeseer2.

Today for my embedded tabletop touchscreens use MiniTools for back up to USB stick and recovery. Works great.

Looks interesting... Can you elaborate on the batch file? I'd like to create an event with HS for this online. I currently still use ghost but I need to bring down my system to do it.

Have a read here for Andy's stuff - batch files.

Windows: Rotation Backup with DriveSnapshot - Version 3.0

                      From Andy's Blog DE.

Over the years here tweaked down W2003 standard to a 20 Gb partition for Homeseer.

An image to the NAS would take 5 minutes in vivo.

An incremental backup took a couple of minutes.

I did a partition backup once a month and a Homeseer directory scheduled back up once a day or whenever I updated Homeseer or any plugins manually.

Today I still do the same in Linux. On Ubuntu small 32/16Gb back up the SD card to an image file compressed.

Most important here in Linux is just a Homeseer directory back up. It's takes 5 minutes to create an Ubuntu LAMP server with Mono such that I am not really concerned these days with the big box image. On the devices that use MicroSD cards it is easy to create an image backup. There is a script posted here relating to doing a backup image en vivo for the RPi2.

I used Ghost in the 1990's from Windows 3.X to Windows XP and it was standard back then for desktop backup in a corporate environment as was Norton utilities, AV, et at. Prices for windows server backup and AV were always higher than the desktop stuff. Desktop support was carrying a Ghost image of the standard desktop, backing up of files and rewriting the desktop. It was a PITA before networks and mostly folks were learning how to use a desktop at the time.

Most important is a DR plan for your Homeseer server.

Testing it to make sure it works is part of this.

Waiting until a disaster happens should not be an impetus to create a DR plan as then it is too late.
