    Anyone having trouble with Windows 10 updates rebooting HS3 controllers?

    So I am running Windows 10 HOME on a small Intel NUC and now I'm having trouble with Microsoft pushing automatic updates (Windows updates) and forcing reboots. I am trying to sort out getting HS3 to auto start when Windows starts but so far I'm not having much luck.

    On top of it all, this morning when it rebooted I guess it didn't shut down cleanly so now most of my devices are gone - HS3 complained about a corrupt database when it started up.

    I'm able to restore a backup from a couple weeks ago, but it's still a nuisance.

    Anybody able to disable Win10 updates on the Home version? I have read quite a bit online and it seems like MS now forces updates on the home version.

    My next move it to fire up an older PC I have that's running Windows 7 professional and I'll move HS3 to that.

    Oh shoot, wrong thread

    Not sure how to move this to a more general HS3 thread.

      For mine I disabled the windows update service.

      I enable it and force manual checks sometime after Patch Tuesday each month.

      For HS to start automatically I run netplwiz.exe to have Windows start up logged into an administrator's account. Then I set UAC (User Account Control) to minimum. Finally I use r2 Studios Startup Delayer to launch HS and other applications at startup. This method has worked very well for me starting with Windows 7 and continuing with Windows 10.

        I think that doesn't work anymore

        I already disabled that service but there's another service that re-enables it for Win10 Home users. I've also tried to rename the wupdate binary to see if I could kill it that way and something else fixes that.

        Anyway, I'll move to Win 7 Pro but I also found this thread about getting HS3 to start up properly from a cold boot:

          Windows 10 Pro does not enable the update service automatically. I wasn't aware that the home version behaved differently. Since Windows 10 Home doesn't support RDP, I never tried it for HomeSeer.

          I think those instructions are fine, but I think Startup Delayer coupled with minimum UAC is a better solution that Task Scheduler.

            +1 for Startup Delayer and UAC. Much easier and more control. Also forgot netplwiz dot exe.

              I run windows 10 LTSB instead of the normal windows 10.

              I also use BL backup to make a zip of the entire HS3 folder every night for a week and once a month for long term backups.

              I also use Startup delayer to kick everything off on auto boot up.

              I also use an event to run this script "&hs.SaveEventsDevices" every 30 min to backup the device status of all my switches.

              I also have bios set to auto boot on power restore.

              With this I seem to have good luck on staying running and returning back running normally with a power outtage. If anything happens I throw away the hs3 folder and replace it with the previous days zipped backup. Then my virtual switches and such might be out of wack until I cycle them once to get them in current position.

                Would love to learn more about your SaveEventsDevices script.

                  I was having a problem that after a power outage or unscheduled shutdown that the status of all my devices virtual and not would return to some previous state from a week or more ago. This could be seen by not only the devices (say home and away virtual switches) current status but also the last changed time was days or weeks before the day this happened. I wanted something to stay more up to date. So not if power goes out and comes back up all my devices status can not be more then 30 min old. If you do a search on the forum you will probley find more info then I can give and it is not "MINE" at all I learned it from the forum myself. There is one thread complaing about my same issue. I also attached a pic of what I have going.

                      I would upgrade to WIN 10 Pro before downgrading to WIN 7.

                      Task Scheduler works fine for me.

                          Couple of responses here...

                          @cheeryfool:
                          Be careful as this behavior changed for me at some point recently. I didn't have this problem before and was doing what you do; monthly manual updates. But again, one of those updates changed things for Win10 Home.

                          @tenholde:
                          I already have a licensed full copy of Win 7 Pro that I was going to use and didn't want to buy a new O/S just for HS. Honestly, I'd much rather run the linux version but I think we all know it's just a mono port of the windows apps and I've run into many limitations myself that prevent me from using a linux host.

                            Out of interest, what do you have in the recovery options for the service? I have First, Second and Subsequent Failures set to "Take no action". I think the default is to "Restart the Service" on the first failure. This may not of course be related, as what we're talking about here isn't a failure per se, but worth verifying.

                            I just performed a manual reboot and the service remained in a disabled state. I will set a reminder to check after my next manual WinUpdate activity.

                            Cheers

                              Good tip, Randy. I have been looking for a way to disable W10 updates and it's not possible through the normal means. I'll see if this works.
