    User / Device setup question

I have successfully installed the PI and Geofency appears to be working well with MyHS. I have a question or two about the device assignment. The device name I initially assigned is 'Doug Iphone' and with an address PHLCUS[261]GC.

When I look at device manager, 'Doug Iphone' has no status buttons and appears to do nothing, but a new entry 'Home' appears with the status buttons. This is the device that reacts with Geofency. Where did 'Home' come from?

The new device 'Home' has a different address: PHLCGC[265]FC

Is this normal for the configuration, and can I change the new device name to suit my needs?

The device "PHLCUS[261]GC" is the root or parent device. This device represents a single instance of Geofency running on a mobile device and is used to hold any configuration data for that instance.
You can change the name, location and device type of root devices to suit your needs but you cannot change the address.

From your screenshot it appears that you have added a new fence on the Geofency mobile app and named it "Home". When Geofency communicates with the plug-in it sends data something like [DeviceId],[FenceName],[FenceStatus]. The plug-in looks for a root device with a matching [DeviceId] and then looks for any child devices under that root with a name matching [FenceName]. If it finds one, then it updates the status of that child device appropriately. If it does not find a matching child, then it creates a new device and names it [FenceName].

So, if you changed the name of the fence in Geofency to "Home123", then the next time the app sends an update for that fence you would get another new child device with the name "Home123"

So, to answer your question. The HS3 device names for "Fence" and "Beacon" devices are set to whatever they are named in the mobile app. If you change the name on the app, then you should also change it in HS3 to prevent creation of new child devices.

    Finally:
The "Near any Fence" device is created by the plug-in when you first add the root device and does just as it's name suggests. If any of the child "Fence" or "Beacon" devices are "Near" then this device will also show "Near".

Each fence or beacon child device can be included / excluded from the "Near Any" check on the PHL tab of the respective device.

If you don't want the "Near any Fence" device, then just delete it from the HS3 device management page. If you later decide that you need it, then open the root device and on the PHL tab hit the Rebuild Child Devices button which will add it back again (albeit with a different DeviceRef).

      Paul,
Thanks so much for the quick and very detailed response. Very informative, now everything makes sense. It is not often that authors take the extra effort to fully describe something that makes perfect sense to them, but might take some explaining to allow the user to fully understand the concept. Thanks again!
