    What ports i can use.

I have homeseer web server setup at home on a port in the thousand range. I can connect to homeseer from just about any pc in the world except the one that i really want to connect from... My work computer. Is there a way to figure out what ports my work has block without going to the admin and asking him?

The reason i dont want to use port 80 is because my ISP says running a web server is against ther TOS and they wont allow me to purchase a static ip for home use they only do 5 static ips at a time and i have no need for 5. So i use No-ip.com along with a port other than the normal ones such as 80 and 8080 and 81 because i am sure they pay close attention to the traffic in and out of these ports and monitor how much BW is used. So i figured if i use a not so common port then they would just think its some third party software running on my pc.

Back on topic. How do i scan or lookup which ports i am allowed to access from work.

You can't really scan which ports work will let through unless you have an application listening on the other end. I suggest you just run the application on a port you are ok with, and see if it works, trial and error is probably going to be the easiest way.

I would try using PCAnyhwere's ports. Your work may have those open.

      You can find them here

Do you have a static IP on your work PC? Chances are they have all non standard ports closed. And only open special ports on specific computers.

Why not talk to the IT people and ask what ports you can use?

if someone came to me to ask which ports they could use to connect to their home system, I would make sure they are blocked

            Escape is impossible!!

Dan, I'm using port 80 - you want to block that? ;-) As long as the IT dept. has a properly-configured proxy server and AV scanning (active content filtering), hitting your home machine shouldn't be a problem.

but he can't run on port 80, so he won't go far Good thing your ip isn't a broadband ip, and changes every 5 seconds, otherwise I might have added a route that sends packets to that host to the bit bucket

Ok here is what i have...

I setup homeseer webserver on port 1569 then on port 80 and then on port 8080.

I have a router and Freedom Software firewall.

I set the router up for port forwarding for all those ports and i told freedom to allow all those ports.

From work i can view other peoples pages who are setup on 8080 so i know that 8080 is a good port for me to use. But when i set up my homeseer server at home i can't view my page from work.

Do you think the freedom software firewall is messing with the router and conflicting and not letting me in from work.

Can anyone give me a list of troubleshooting tips to try. I am using comcast as my ISP and i think they block port 80.

I would definitely disable the 'freedom' firewall for troubleshooting reasons, or you might be hurting your head on this one for a while.

You can try ftp (21) or telnet (23) as your HS listening port.

I've been using this for tightvnc with great success.

There are a couple of anonymous proxy servers you could use. My company only allows HTTP on port 80, and for a while I had HS running on a non-80 port. I was able to use proxify ( http://www.proxify.com )to get to it. I know there are others as well.

As far as your ISP is concerned, they probably have most ports open, especially gaming ports and such. As far as your work place, They probably have most ports blocked except possibly ftp, email, and pcanywhere. My company has ftp and eamil blocked, but they don't have the SSL 443 port blocked, so I use it for the below webcam. You might try the below link from work to see if you can see the cam. I've suggested this to others with the same problem and it generally works.

unless you were the person asking me if I could open up our inbound firewall access so you could run peer2peer clients to download illegal software, no, I am not him

Be careful with using public proxies, most of these just log data to catch interesting passwords and such.
