          New Update

The biggest problem I have is my appetite is not coming back. Nothing looks good. What ever I eat I can get about 2 to 4 bites before I feel like I am going to gag.

I saw the main surgeon this week. He has released me back to the Oncologist and says the next round of chemo can start in two weeks. I see the Oncologist on the 25th. Should find out when chemo will start then. Chemo will go for 3 months. After that I will go back to the hospital for surgery to get rid of my ileostomy bag. The surgeon says 3 days in the hospital. This should be late October, early November time frame.

Thanks for the update! Did you pay extra for the surgery/diet combination or was that a gift from the hospital? Keep recovering!

Jeff I hope you start feeling better exponentially. From experience I can tell you that going from a liquid to a solid diet can sometimes be difficult. If you are on Ensure type of supplement to much can give you issues so only take what the doctor advised more is not always better. There is a somewhat equivalent supplement called Enlive from the makers of Ensure. Not quite as many calories but it is more tolerable because it is juice based (apple or mixed berry are the ones I have had). It comes in juice boxes. You can ask your doctors if they think it might help you and your pharmacy can order it for you as very few stock it. If you search for it on the web you can probably find coupons from the mfg.

If they gave you something to enhance your appetite such as Megace it can take a few weeks to kick in.

              Feel better and good luck.

Hi Jeff. I won't even pretend to know what it is like to go day by day through what you are dealing with. I have though had a few close family members go through chemo, and a death in the family from cancer, so my best wishes to you and your family. I can only say take it day by day, as obviously you are, and we are all rooting for you here. Get well soon...

Sorry, its been a while since I posted an update.

July was a rough month. The last week in June I started getting dizzy and headaches when I would stand up. It was getting worse and on July 1st, I actually blacked out for a few seconds. Came to leaning against the wall and trying to figure out where I was. My wife took me to the emergency room. One of the measurements for kidneys is creatinine. Normal range is .6 to 1.2. In June mine had been considered high at 1.73. That day in the ER, it was at a 7. I was admitted to the hospital. I was in the hospital July 1 to 5th. Got out on a Saturday feeling great. That lasted about 4 days. The problems with the kidneys were due to being dehydrated. I was drinking lots of diet Gatorade. Turns out I need the sugar so switched to regular Gatorade. We finally have that under control and the last two times I was checked my levels have been in the normal range.

I started back to work on July 8th. I was getting low on leave time. I haven't been on the forums because by the time I get off work I just don't have the energy to stay at my desk.

My next round of chemo was originally supposed to start July 8th but I was starting to get dehydrated again so they did a hydration session instead.
My creatinine will be checked with every chemo session.
Chemo did start on July 25th. It went well. The difference between this time and earlier in the year is I am still recovering from surgery this time so I have been a lot more tired from the chemo than I was from the first round.

Did get some good news. Went to the kidney specialist on July 31st for a test that checks to see if the kidneys are working correctly and are able to empty completely. They are working exactly as needed so I don't have to go back to the kidney surgeon. 2 down. 2 to go.

                            Future items at this point.
4 more sessions of chemo ending the first Friday in October. 6 weeks later I will be in the hospital for surgery to remove the illioscopy bag and reattach my large intestines. No more dealing with the bag after that!!! Should be in the hospital for 3 days and then some recovery time at home. I will be so glad when this year is over.
