    Happy Memorial Day

"Happy" is probably not the right word... as it's not a happy occasion. But for those of us in the U.S., don't forget to take a moment to reflect on the solemnity of the day, especially for those who gave their lives in the pursuit of our freedom and for those family members and friends who share deeply in that sacrifice.

You are correct about "happy" being an inappropriate term, but it is common. Regardless, I share in your sentiment. By turning Memorial Day into the unofficial start of summer, we've blurred the true meaning of the day. By celebrating with friends and family, we are, in effect, paying tribute to those who paid the ultimate price so we can enjoy our freedom.

It is unnecessary, and sometimes unwise, to issue holiday-specific wishes, especially when the holiday calls for us to be respectful and perhaps contemplative. For that reason, we don't celebrate the day, but we do celebrate the lives of those who gave so much.
