TV ads have been given the green light to mess with your Amazon Alexa

I've not had time to read this yet, but it comes from Graham Cluleys computer security website:

    Thoughts ?

Can't read it as it looks like a podcast with no transcription, but it might be referring to this https://www.the-ambient.com/news/ama...leared-asa-335

I've just listened to it, and that's the one. They are saying it's a UK only thing, and that ads on tv could put items in your virtual trolley, and it's up to you to notice them, and take them out before you confirm the order.

I have had situations where Echo has thought I ordered something based upon TV audio. When ask for confirmation I of course decline. Seems like the "commercial" could also build in a yes, yes, yes part of the add. The burden and hassle would be mine to cancel or return.

Not a problem now but it does open up a new realm of security concerns and potential exploits.

Just another reason to boycott commercials.

Here have one Amazon Echo in the TV room and have heard Alexa twice mention that she hasn't understood the request when there was no request. Wife's views all recorded stuff (cooking shows mostly). She does always fast forward through the commercials. I stream movies with no commercials.

Playing a bit here with car pc (recognized device on the bus of the automobile) / integration to built in HU / Miracast / Live streaming TV and noticed that I get a message during commercials but do not see commercials which I like. (note that I do not watch TV while driving and mostly listen to the audio).

It's already been proven that you can make Alexa and Google home respond to "voices" recorded outside of the frequencies humans hear. You could have a situation arise where the audio to order and confirm is imbedded in anything you watch or listen to and you wouldn't know it.

A couple of weeks ago at a family gathering did tell the Amazon Alexa to set the lights on and do this and that. Basically relatives stated something like "that's nice".

During the evening one relative was measuring 17" with her hands and I said something like it looked more like 3 feet. I pulled out my electronic tape measure with a laser side and said 17" to it extending it with a button to 17" and everybody watching thought that my tape measure was using voice recognition. Kind of funny to watch.

BTW thank you Jeff for the suggestion of the off lease Lenova desktops. Here purchased two i5's Haswell based M73's with 8Gb of memory, 500Mg HD's, wireless and Windows 10 at a very good price replacing the old Shuttle computers. Tiny things smaller than the Shuttle computers. Mostly though saw Sandy Bridge iSeries coming off lease on sale on Ebay.

Description: Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Tiny Desktop Core i5-4590T 2.0GHz Quad 8GB 500GB HDD WiFi

It's skinnier than the M93's that I saw with DVD RW Drive. All of the M73's that I looked at had an iSeries 3 and these had an iSeries 5 and 8 Gb of RAM.

None of the off lease M93's though were Haswell iSeries....looked like they were all Sandy Bridge.

What is the difference between the M73 and the M93 anyhow?

                          Very nice Jeff!

I like the clutter free look.

Curious what is the difference between the M73 and the M93?

Googling see that the M93 is an M93P which is supposed to be the professional series (making it around $100 more than the M73).

When looking here on Ebay all of the M93's off lease sales were iSeries generation 2 and had a modular slim DVD RW drive attached to them.

yes these come with the dvd player... hard part is when you mount it to a monitor... you loose the dvd so I guess you can do a usb cord to it... but I don't use dvd anyway. everything I have is ISO and burn to thumb drive if need to boot... say for os install... else mount iso and install apps

the M73 is done... the new stuff is M600, M700-M715, M910 and M910x
