Sorry to hear about your loss. For future reference what I have done for my basement is the following: I have a battery backup sump pump. A battery powered water alarm - "Basement Watchdog Water Alarm, model BWD-HWA" that I picked up at the local Ace Hardware for $10.00. A float switch wired to a powerflash module. The setup is like this. The Ace Hardware alarm sensor is below the battery operated sump pump float so if there is somebody at home a shrill alarm sounds first. This is a prewarning for what comes next. If the battery sump runs then the float that is wired to the powerflash module activates a HomeSeer event to flash table lamps and a x-10 beeper on each level of my home as well as send a text message my cell phone, my wife's cell phone and my son's cell phone as well as my pager and work email. It may sound like over kill but I feel a lot better knowing that my basement has some level of protection.
