Just got HomeSeer 1.7 Jumping all In!

    Hi there,

I'am new to homeSeer but have been reading ,lurking here for a while. Great forum you got here, one of the most active and contributed to I have ever come across.
I use allot of X-10 stuff and custom automation bits.
I write Labview Applications for my daily bread , and I have an EE. looking forward to fire'ing up my HA setup.

    I will be using a Windows Server2003 on a
    Dell OPTIPLEX GX260 Intel P4, 1.80GHZ
    512meg. RAM, 180Gig HD.
Intel 82845 Graphics Cont. (built in)
    HomeSeer V 1.7

It will be a dedicated machine with HS as it's only purpose in life. How should this perform? It's a small footprint and I got it real cheap .
    TIA.

Welcome 22V10. Watch out because this stuff is addicting. That hardware will be more than enough to run HS.

      Welcome to the family

Your Dell should work just fine and it will appear very responsive as you start out. The only real resource hogs are speach-related and video streaming. You will also find that elapsed time is another big hitter as files become bigger and additional software takes its little bite out of the cpu.

The X10 powerline is very low bandwidth, so when you have the opportunity try to use other communication means such as RF. If you have been lurking then it is likely you have seen many performance-related discussions as well as many others that spawn interesting ideas.

        Neighbors?

Wow, I live there too! Do you know Bob?

Seriously, welcome aboard and I agree on the addictive part.

I have been in ha for awhile but after getting HS all the pieces started to fall togather and I have had more fun in the latter stages of this hobby than any other I have been involved in.

Later, Terry (sorry, couldn't resist the Earth joke)

Yea, I'm hoping it performs real well for that job.
I have tons of questions, However
I want to get the X10 control to be taken over from the active home start up stuff I have(8 lights, front gate motion detector, chimer and remote) and a couple extra motion detectors etc.

Need to figure out how I can walk around the property and have some control from a remote like an ipronto.

Can I set up a touch screen in the living room as a separate controller, with like ML as the front end?
and still have a remote like the tsu7000 control ?

I will have the dell(homeseer)computer in a wiring closet, connected via 10/100 network to my small LAN, ups backed up for about 3 hours of run time. I have an ADSL modem & Router.
The main computer is in the den with about 6 or 7 other workstations on the property. I wanted to use remote desktop to the homeseer Win2003 server?
Can I use my laptop from let's say the garage via 802.11G and control the homeseer system?

          What I would like to use my homeseer for;
          Lights
I have a couple web cams.
          Thermostat, ac/heat control (RC-100B)HAI's RC-Series Thermostats
          Sprinkler control Rfid (home/away)
Audio/ Video system (interface or control)
          blind control
interface or control the alarm system w/smoke det.
eventualy do some voice recognition and anuciation.

You guy's see any problems or pittfalls I can avoid? sorry for the full salvo....

First of all I would recommend posting a single question or 2 at a time. Many BB users shy away from disertations according to the statistics.

If by property you mean the house an maybe a small amount of the lawn then I would suggest a W800 RF controller. These can obtain the desired range using the proper antenna.

22V10You may also want to look at the v572A for Whole House RF. I use this device made by the same folks that do the W800 in a 4000 Sq Ft house and it rocks. I can even run stuff from all of my surrounding neighbors houses.

I guess the biggest difference in tehse is the v572 is standalone and the w800 connects to the pc directly.

I started this HA journey about 5 months ago and finally bought Homeseer 3 months ago. take it slow and easy and it will all come together at once. I will be glad to shre my configuration info and such if you want to email me privately. I have implemented tons of stuff now and have a few more things planned.

                      Found this in the "dissertation"

"Can I set up a touch screen in the living room as a separate controller, with like ML as the front end?
and still have a remote like the tsu7000 control ?"

Yes, you can use both MainLobby (via desktop or touchscreen) and a handheld remote at the same time. I control my TV that way. I use MainLobby TVLobby as a TV guide, and the Tivo remote control IR unit to change channels / change volume. I can also click on a Touchscreen running MainLobby to change channels / change volume too. Homeseer can also do same for automated control (lower volume of TV when phone rings...).

WHen I hit enter from my pc it pops up on the TV set in a box "yo this is a test"
I want home seerer to hit me with status updates while watching CSI
