Pool pump control using a SwitchLinc 220V Relay

Hey Mark, been a long time. Your progress on this plugin is awesome.

I am having some issues and wanted to get your thoughts.

    Specs:
    HomeSeer version is: 2.3.0.60
    Insteon, version: 1.5.3.0

    Device Type: SwitchLinc 220V Relay
    Firmware Version: 38
Comm Reliability: 95% (71 failed out of 1318 cmds)
    Insteon Device ID: 12.DA.61
    Device code: ]41

I have been using a SwitchLinc 220V Relay to control my pool pump successfully until about 90 days ago. The scripts turn the pump on at 10:00 PM and then turns it off after a variable number of hours depending on temperature. For the life of me, I can't remember anything that changed around that time but the device has become unreliable. I have not been able to find a cause so for now, I have modified the scripts that at the appropriate time, will try to turn off the pool pump, poll the device, and if its not off, then wait 5 mins and try again for up to 40 times. I also upgraded the plug in version from 1.4.x to 1.5.3.0
a few weeks ago to see if it would make a difference.

Last night, I turned on "Detailed Debugging Log Entries" logging level at 3/31/2011 10:16:05 PM. I have attached a snippet of the log from when the script started attempted to turn off the SwitchLinc 220V Relay at 4/1/2011 3:42:00 AM through when it was finally successful at 4/1/2011 4:09:07 AM (after 6 attempts). I didn't trim anything out so there are of course other data in the snippet.

The one thing I find odd is that it seems some of the detailed Insteon logging disappeared for a while last night.

    3/31/2011 10:16:05 PM - Started detailed logging
3/31/2011 11:27:11 PM - ~!~Insteon~!~ messages seemed to have stopped
4/01/2011 03:57:46 AM - They started back up

Is this a problem with my PLM?

Thanks for your help and let me know if you need additional logs, etc. Gre

    Hey Lee,

if the relay is not responding consistently, have you tried resetting it and then reprogramming it from the plugin.

if it just stopped working (and you didn't make any changes, eg upgrades to the plugin) then i would suspect the device assuming the rest of your insteon network is working just fine.

i haven't specifically changed anything related to this device

    Thanks for your support
    Mark

Thanks Mark. I have reset the PLM previously and will try resetting the Relay as soon as I get home.

I have seen other random times where another device doesn't respond properly but I chalked it up to no network is 100% reliable. 28 of my 34 devices are in the >98% reliablity range although my I/O linc in the garage is at 74%.

So do you find it odd that the detailed logging didn't show any communication messages for large parts of the log?

I just remembered that I did have a full disk issue a while back and restored HS back to a previous backup. If the communications look OK in the log, maybe I should consider rebuilding my Homeseer server to clean up any data corruption?

after you reset the plm did you use the 'update insteon interface..' btn to reprogram the necessary links into the plm?

regarding the log, not sure what to make of that; if you didn't get any log msgs then that is probably a hs issue. if it was just insteon msgs that were missing then any chance you set the plugin logging to 'none'?

reset the comm stats on the 220v relay and see how it does now

Thanks Mark. I did update the interface at the time which worked beautifully.

As far as the log, it seemed to me that I put the log setting in debug, a few hours later while I was sleeping, the Insteon messages stopped for a while, then returned. I agree with you that it may be a problem with the installation. I will run logging a few more nights and see if there are any more gaps.

Incidently, two nights ago, it took Homeser 35 attempts, 5 mins apart to turn off the pump, consistently coming back with status 17 each time after polling. The Comm Reliability % of the device shows "95% (11 failed out of 219 cmds)" as of this morning. Doesn't seem to match up so leaning towards a problem with the installation.

          Thanks for your insights.

Also, is there a way to turn on detailed debug logging through an event? I would like to set up the detail logged to see if I can capture the problem without letting it run all the time.

Thanks Mark. As a work around, I thought I would just create a script to post to the Insteon config page appropriately. But I haven't investigated it yet.

yah, that would work but will be some work. I already have script access built. I can post a build later if this works for you.

that said, i see you are running 1.5.3. do you mind upgrading?

                      Ok, here you go.

a few other new features included

                      - set the logging level via script
                      - set the led brightness level of KPLS, switchlincs and relays where appropriate
                      - change the settings for v2 Motion Sensors.

To set the logging level via a script
create an event and then add an "run script" action
                      Then switch to Advanced View,
enter the following in the script statement: &hs.plugin("Insteon").setloglevel(X)

                      where X is
                      0 - no logging
                      1 - normal logging
                      2 - debug logging
                      3 - detailed logging

Let me know if this does the trick

"set the led brightness level ": don't see this on my KPL; is there a minimum F/W level (mine is V2, 2B)? What's the minimum for Switchlinc's?

the switches need to be i2 (usually firmware 30 or later)

hey, but try the new MS settings, and let me know

So I have seen that sometimes, the pool pump will go off as expected but many times, it requires many attempts. With the new plugin, I turn on detailed logging at 10PM and let it run all the way until the pump actually is confirmed off. In last night's logs (similiar to the one I posted earlier), it appears that the plugin had problems talking to the PLM for around an hour and a half.

It looks like the last commands were polling a SwitchLinc V2 600W Dimmer for status (0C.99.3D) and then poll commands to the two Venstar thermostats like it does every 5 mins. Then started getting "Transmit Failed for CMD" messages for 91 minutes. During this blackout period is when the script tried to turn off the pump and continue to fail until the plug-in finally logged a "~Received STX 0x50" again.

                              Code:

Does "Transmit Failed for CMD" mean that the plug-in couldn't communicate with the PLM or would that be a different message?

I will continue to log and see if there is a pattern for the times during the evening.
