Z-wave thermostat as wireless low-voltage relay

I have a Wayne Dalton Z-wave thermostat that I don't use anymore. I would like to use it as a wireless contact closure device.

Example: Turn on a 12v device (e.g. battery-operated fountain that runs on 12v batteries) in a location that is within range of my Z-wave network, but not near an outlet. The thermostat has a battery slot.

    Does this sound feasible?

    Any thoughts out there?

It has a battery, but does it really run on the batteries, or are the batteries just to hold the settings when the power goes out? I guess the only way to know is try it out.

Try it without anything hooked up. You should be able to hear a click if the t-stat is turning On/off.
