You get what you pay for so don't get too cheap or you will be disappointed with the screen. Here's a good place to start. Look at the reviews.

I'm with you on the Apple stuff. I'm almost afraid to mention that word as they may charge me for saying it
The Nexus line of tablets are the best I've ever used. If a 7" will do they have come down a lot in the last few months.

Buy one and another and another and play with each one and return the one(s) you don't want or like.

Personally here like the large flat one's with HD resolution used mostly to browse the web and read stuff (only) while I wait wherever I happen to be.

Curious if you use reading glasses or need them?

Digiland makes tablets for cheap and they have really good reviews.

All about the Nexus7 1st gen here. We have maybe 5 or 6 of them and they do pretty week. Most of the time I buy them for less than $140. Even bought 1 reman for $90 from new egg. 3 retailers to buy from are Groupon, Newegg, and Amazon.

For a case, I like the "Bobj Rugged Case". I've seen our tablet roll and bounce down a flight of stairs and nothing happened.

Another thing about cheap tablets and smart phones are there lack of RAM. Drives me nuts to have to wait for a device to catch up with me and that's what any China off brand will do. You think ur saving money till u throw it in the trash
