    Linux PDC

    Better check with http://www.samba.org
Samba can be a PDC to older versions of windows but cannot yet be a PDC for anything active domain'ish. There's a problem with the way micro$oft implemented some of the internal users/groups that can't easily be duplicated using Samba. If you don't use/need active directory support though Samba is wonderful. I've got several Samba servers whose users are only defined in a micro$oft server running active directory.

btw.. I'm not aware of any cable companies (in Michigan at least) requiring you to be a member of their smb domain. In fact most require you to disable netbios/netbui support on the cable interface so that windows file services/browser services don't bother the cable network. For ease of explaination you can think of a windows domain as a centrally managed workgroup.
