Appropriate way to get current status of virtual device

I'm a total beginner with scripting on homeseer. I'm creating a virtual device who's state is based on a URL I have to hit that returns a JSON payload that I have to decipher. Since I have to query this to get the state, would the appropriate way be to just run an event every x minutes\seconds? Is there a rule of thumb regarding frequency? When I bring up devices or open HS3Touch on my phone, can I have it query at the time?
