Strange issues caused by bad z-wave device?

Over the past weekend, i upgraded my hometroller SEL to 435. The next day or so I began having some erratic operation with z-wave devices, and homeseer and my SEL began going down. Figuring there was an issue with the update, I went back to my previous version, but was still having issues and crashes, so i went back to 435 again. I then had two z-wave devices completely remove themselves from the controller. I also had the SEL change its IP address (it has been on dhcp but had the same address for years). Then the other day I went upstairs to find one of my Trane 624 thermostats blank but with the backlight flickering. After pulling the thermostat off the wall, everything seems to be back to normal and homeseer has been up with no crashes. I guess this is just an example of how a dying z-wave device can cause havoc.
