Audio out for TTS

I finally have a usage scenario for text to speech, and am hoping I can just hook up an external powered speaker to the 3.5mm jack on the SEL.

Has anyone had any success with this? It appears that the 3.5mm jack combines both line out and mic, so I may need a splitter (?).

More importantly, is all the proper Linux support for audio out pre-installed on the sel?
